Default Gears Next, Tough Call.

My next mod will be gears. I dont want to do it twice, so I need everyones best arguement for witch gear and why. I have been leaning heavy to 4.10s but some people say it will be slower in the long run(Witch I dont see). I know it will rev on the highway. I can deal with that if it means Im gonna dig that much harder. This car sees highway maybe once a week tops. Other than that its a daily 5 mile car. Thanks for any advice.

Get 3.73's. In an Auto, they are great, cause of the first gear ratio, you can get a good launch. 4.10's are good for a M6, and a little too low for an A4.

By too low you mean what exactly? First is so granny that 4.10s wont pull as hard off the light? Even with DR's?

In an Auto it's low, DR will catch it, but 3.73's will give you a better constant acceleration. Lower is not necessarily better. Some guy in a 97SS had 4.56's in it with A4. We ran off a stoplight. He got me off the line, but as soon as I hit second, I was catching him, and passing him halfway through that gear. 4.56 is a good 1/8 mile gear, so imagine how low them 4.10's would be on the street, compared to 3.73's.

So to some degree the steeper gear gives you less time in the power curve in essence hindering forward progress? I plan to run a stall as well eventually.

I like the 3.73's, it still has some decent mileage, and a nice pull.

Was it faster with the 4.10s or did it feel like it loses some mid track pulling power?

My 4.10s didnt feel like they lost anything. If your gona take your car to that track a lot and you want a good gear for the street to get 4.10s. I wouldnt want it any different, other than Bigger!

well for the 4L60E/700R4's that are in the Fbody's... you might want the 4.10's cuz the ratio's in the tranny, there are such big drops you need the rear gear to help keep it pushing through the gears...

Don't want to do it twice? Might as well save up for an aftermarket rear, lol

4.10 in a auto is alot of gear. IMO 3.73's would be best. But hey your car

With an A4 in OD set on cruise....
With 4.10's @ 75mph you will be around 2600-2800rpms, maybe a little more/less depending on tire/wheel size.
With 3.73's @ 75 you will be around 2300-2500, maybe a little more/less depending on tire/wheel size.

You will lose 3-5 mpg either way.

Here's my insight...
If I where you....
Youre car is pretty much stock. If you want to make it alot faster, you can't just go buying mods as soon as you have the money, you need to line things up.

Either way you will need a stall converter. For 3.73's I recommend a 2600-3200 for Daily Driving. If you go with 4.10's, I recommend a higher stall so your car stays in the higher revs longer for the lengthy gear. Around 3000-4000.

If it was me, I'd go 3.73's. But not until I got Headers and a Stall.
Those 3 things lined up correctly will shave 1 full second.

I'd go with 3.73's and a stall if it were me.

I think thats the best auto setup.

I will throw a good $400 a month at the car so it will all come together in a decent amount of time anyway. How hard is it to install the torque converter. I mean. I know how to do it, I have done it before, but in things like Monte SS's etc. How do things look on these bad boys?
