Anyone running a 420 iron block?
4.040 bore X 4.100 stroke. This seems to make sense for what I am wanting to do and 408s have just become the norm. I know that there are always debates about going past the 4.00" stroke without having custom sleeves. I dont see much of anyone doing this and have to be sure it isnt going to cause any inherant problems. Not looking for an opinion about extra stroke or an out of square setup. Only want to know what exact issues this setup will be faced with mechanically. If this doesnt make sense I will probably just go the 370 route and save the extra cash. Also this is going to see a 200 shot one way or the other.
Thanks

Yes Tim has an iron block but I believe he has a 4.03" bore x 4.125" stroke. I could be wrong though. The only down side to the 4.1" stroke is there is quite a bit more stuff to clearance. Depending on the piston you choose could make or break the deal depending on how much they are clearanced for the reluctor wheel. Usually if all 8 come clearanced then you're golden. I know C5 guys usually have to cut out a section of the oil pan and reweld it to keep the crank from hitting, but after that you are golden.
Good luck. Shirl dickey is probably the man to talk to.

I am sure everybody has there own preferences with engine building, but if you look at a 408. The stroke is 4" and the rod is 6.125, which comes out to a 1.5312 rod ratio. A 1.55 ratio is already at the bottom end of the spectrum for "ideal" ratio, so to make it worse buy going to a 4.100 to make the ratio 1.4934, or a 4.125 to make the ratio 1.4846, just seems like your asking for more trouble with sideload of the piston, and piston rock. just my .02

I have an iron 4.060 bore x 4.075 stroke. Motor has 6k hard miles and has run good. I am using a lunati 4" crank that was offset ground to 4.075 for use with a 2" journal carrillo rod (very similar in apparance to eagle rods) and je custom pistons. There was no extra clearancing done for the rods or reluctor wheel.

I talked to my engine builder and he feels like it should not need any clearancing except for the piston skirt depending on what make and skirt length. Last time he built a 4.125 stroke ls1 JE was supposed to do a custom cut skirt to accomdate and it didnt fit right. He said that he just does them by hand now. Also slight change in the ring group height and spacing.
