Default Question about Dart heads?

No I am not switching heads but just had a question for a buddy. The 225 head takes a different size valve correct? Can the stock spring setup be used on this head with just the correct size valve? Or will you need new retainers and locks as well?

How will a 225 work on a stock LS1 bore?

I am pretty sure that the stock spring set-up will work on the heads but SUMMIT is offering the heads fully assembled for $1,290 shipped with a kick azz single spring made by PSI and a little stronger than 918s and good for .625 lift. For that price, that ma be the way to go, but on stock cubed motor that is not seeig f/i i would go with the 205 DART heads. I ordered my 225ccc Darts from summit for my blown LS6 motor after a couple of C5 guys (one being a mechanic) ordered these and said they are AWESOME for the price. KP has the 225 on his D1SC blown f body and with 01 Z cam runs 9.44 at over 140mph!!

I just got the 225's w/2.05 - 1.60 valves from summit. Only $1287 to my door. Before I bought them, I talked to Dart331 on the forums about valves, retainers, etc. Thought I could do better by piecing them together. After PM'ing Dart331, I went ahead and bought the completes. Saved a bunch of money. Summit lists these as having steel retainers but they ARE titanium. I'm pretty happy I didnt waste money buying bare heads and parts. The only thing I did to mine when I got them was smooth out the casting flash and pimples. Only took an hour and I did more than necessary. The only reason to change anything IMO is if your cam is bigger than .600 lift. Still, I'd get them and sell the springs/retainers and get new ones. You cant beat the price....for now anyway.

Well, the heads he is looking at are for $800, he has a brand new spring set (which is why I asked) and would only need valves if he could use the springs. The heads are bare but he could get the heads for under $1100 if he can use his springs and stuff, so for him he will save a few bucks.

Does the spring set include machined locks and titanium retainers??? Have him add the cost of these two items and see if he's still going to be saving money. Also, he'll need a height micrometer and all the necessary shims to set the heads up properly. Just some food for thought.

I already have the tools. The reason of this post was to find out what was needed if he already has a set of dual springs for an LS1 head. I want to know, besides valves, what else is needed. So you are saying he will need different locks than the stock LS1? As well as retainers? He already has the springs, seats, seals, locks and retainers for an LS1 head.

Actually, I was under the impression that he just had the springs and needed to purchase the rest. It sounds as if he has all the necessary parts to assemble them. As long as everything is matched, you're good to go.

Yeah he has it all, BUT I know the valve sizes are different on the Dart head (the stem diameter, from what I am told at least) and want to be sure he can pop the ones off his heads now and just reuse them once we shim the springs.

Granted, I could have been told something totally wrong lol

Dart LS1 Heads currently use 11/32 valve stems instead of the standard 8mm

Initially, Dart had planned on going with 3/8 valve stems, but the feedback they were getting pointed them in the direction to run 8mm valves. They changed them before they hit the streets (along with adding Titanium retainers, machined locks, an I believe, upgraded beehive springs)) Aren't stock LS1 valves 8mm??

Good question, I have no idea but since there was that note I thought it was just something special.

I did a search for "Dart 8mm" and found this in another thread, it was posted by Dart331 who works for Dart:

Knowing first hand about our dealer pricing Jegs and SUmmit buy just like any other dealer for Dart, no special treatment, this help keep the market fair. Jegs and Summit catalog pricing has to be approved 4 months prior to printing, when we originally priced the heads it was using our existing parts, 11/32 valves, standard springs, and retainers etc.

We heard your voices and we decided to change to 8mm valves, more expensive than 11/32, beehive springs, more expensive than regular springs, titanium retainers instead of steel, (do you guys watch the metal market to see what titanium cost these days), seals that have the hardened shim built in etc. These things are what changed the cost. Summit and Jegs were not making money selling parts at $640.00 each.

Hope that clears up the cost issues!!

As for smoking issues, buy the as cast heads, and bolt them on, havent had any problems, we are working with TSP to find out why they are having problems now...

Thanks
