This article helped me understand a lot.

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/torque-converter.htm

If you are a reading based learner, I think you might like their explanations. Hope it helps.

From what I have gathered the correct term is a torque converter and the stall is the "unit of measure" it uses.

yes, a stall converter is called "stall because of the looseness, and the rpms are higher (or stall higher)
a torque (or stall) converter multiplies trq....

yes rpms is the difference. When you drive a stalled car and mash the pedal it will immediately take you engine to the set amount the stall can handle. So in other words you get into your power band quicker.
If you ease in to your throttle you will have a limited amount of slipage but it wont flash to max rpm. It kind of feels like moving under the power of a slipping clutch.

Nope it is how high you want. Best bet is tell the place you are buying yours from and have them recomend one for your application and purpose.

so if i have a 3000 stall, if i am at a full stop at a red light in D with my foot on the brake, is my car idling at 3000 RPM or does my car idle at the at stock RPM and when i step on the gas does it start at 3000?

thanks,

using your example of a 3000 RPM stall converter.. It will idle just like normal but it will flash or rev to 3000rpm if you stomp on it. whn you acelerate like normal it will rev up more than stock and hold higher RPM's when part throttle but still pretty much drive like a stock torque converter car.

so basically a higher stall allows your car to achive higher RPM's faster.

Ok thanks guys for all the info thus far..its really starting to sink in now(about time right lol). The only thing I seem to be a little foggy on still is when you accelerate like normal(not racing) will the car feel any different than stock?...will the rpms act any different than stock? Thanks.

You will notice a difference. It will feel like a slipping clutch is the best way to describe it. BUt it wont get to crazy. But when you mash it...................LOOK OUT!
