Default How hard would it be to make a homemade sts style turbo kit?

I was looking around for a forced induction setup for my ta, after finding out that the kit costs upwards of 3k, i was wondering how hard it would be to make my own turbo kit. I would make a rear mount turbo setup similar to the sts kit, i was just wonering what the roundabout cost would be...

By the time you spend all the money on tools, parts, pieces, materials, and time designing your own kit it would more than likely cost you the same, if not more, than what a retail kit costs.

depends on how many friends you have with mandral benders and if you can weld, and how good you are at making things.

I figured the only thing i would really need to invest in would be the turbah, BOV, Waste gate and 20-30 ft of 3" pipe, ive got axcess to a mandrel bender, welder, hoist, and all other tools.

Also, if someone could hook me up with some detailed pictures, or the demsions, angles of bends, and stuff like that it would help alot im gonna go ahead with trying my idea...

Its tough to pull off sometimes depending on who you know and what you know. If you arent very familiar with turbo builds, youll likely end up spending more. And if you arent careful, you might be fixing things sooner than later. You might want to also consider their universal kit if you want a good DIY start.

also, 3" is a little big for running under the car. I believe the kits come with 2 1/4

Email STS I am sure they will give you all of this...

If you want to fabricate something yourself.. then do just that FABRICATE IT YOURSELF.

With the questions you are asking you would be better off buying a kit.. and having someone else install it.

I liked the rear mount idea but that was it as far as the STS kit goes. I ran a self contained oiling system and spent almost a grand on that. Just didn't want to run engine oil all the way back to front of the car. Turbo, Waste gate BOV was 1200 plus custom bent pipes 375 plus guages, wideband fuel pump injectors, tuning cam and valvetrain. 100 there 50 there it keeps going and going. My kit cost way more than the sts but I think its way better also
you could turbocharge the car for less than three grand but it will NOT stop there!

if you wanted to do your own contained oiling system could you just make an oil tank, get a pump and flow it through the turbo or is it not that easy?

i made my own kit, just got it tuned actually...all my charge piping got done at a regular muffler shop who happened to have a nice mandrel bend machine even though its not reaaaalllly a must for a 2" pipe and 5-10psi...
my car made 381rwhp/415rwtq at 5psi...low numbers (for me) but i had to play with my setup to get a better combo going on...i had a .96 exhaust housing on dyno day and that took a longgg time to spool on the street...felt like a dam supra..on the dyno not as much because we were pulling WOT runs and starting at about 3000 rpm..so i didnt realize at the time how it would act under 3000rpm regular driving...SO i swapped in a .68 exhaust housing i had just in case...and DAM...night and day difference..pulls HARD way earlier in the powerband and stays pulling all the way to the top...im VERY satisfied (for now anyways)...i walked on a LS1 GTO with bolt ons and a 150 shot...(supposedly had weak bottle pressure but who cares lol)

my setup:
*masterpower super T70- (with a .96 exhaust housing is the one i used for the dyno) swapped to a 'smaller' .68 housing for better spool and response
*Tial 38mm wastegate(4psi spring)
*Turbo XS Manual Boost Controller(turned it up to get the boost up to 5psi)
*Greddy Type-S BOV
*Ford Motorsports "green top" 42lbs injectors
*BONE STOCK motor (only Pacesetter long tubes and 3" Ypipe to turbo)
*2" charge pipes along the drivers side of the car like a subframe & turned up at k-member, expanded to 3.5" for MAF and then a close radius rubber elbow (3.5" to 4") to turn into the throttle body
*Tuning done by Jesse Mock with HP Tuners here in Florida @ Cartech Tuning(Jesse is also an STS dealer who happens to work at JL Turbo, Ft. Lauderdale) very cool guy
*Braided Oil Lines to and from turbo, Russell Oil Fittings,
*Mocal Diff./Tranny OIL pump for the return line from racerpartswholesale.com ($190) and a $8 check valve on the feed line right before the turbo to stop the oil from pooling up over night or while the car is off. Thanks To BILLY @ TRTturbo for that VERY important $8 piece of info...which believe it or not was one of the most important components on my setup...because i tried doing the setup withOUT the check valve and all i got everytime i started it up was oil spewing out of the turbo and going EVERYWHERE lol

my setup camne out roughly to alittle over $2400 for everything INCLUDING tuning which was $500...also i did alot of stuff by myself AND got alot of help from my best friend...he helped me drill my oil pan, helped me do the oil lines..welded some flanges for my wastegate/BOV...and also helped me trouble shoot it every day for a few weeks..lol any questions or comments PM me or just reply back

Modified porsche one for around $150 .Braided hose and fittings $100, And A PWM speed controler, with boost ref speed, $150, plus misc crap pretty close to $1000.

fenix what did you do for PCV setup? and are the 42lb just for growing? seems at 385rwhp you could get away with the stock 26lb.

IMO i think thats decent for what you spent on that turbo. Those are similar to cam only numbers and you probably spent roughly the same after considering all the bolt ons needed and still a tune. just wanted to point that out as many would just say "you could have just swapped in a cam and made the same power"....except a cam doesnt make the car sound like a jet taking off
Your also heads and fuel pump away from bumping to 8psi.

btw dump your pacesetters and go coated stock manifolds w/ ORY. Itll help your spool and maybe show a power bump.
