Cam without headers worth it?
Thinking of changing a cam in a 98 corvette. Just has air intake with K&N LS6 intake and a borla cat back. Would it be worth it to change the cam without headers? Also looking into a stall converter, I know that should be matched to the cam. How large could I go with manifolds? I am looking to keep the car moderately quiet

You need to search for the CheaTR cam. Our search feature is down, but if you go to yahoo.com you can find the information you're seeking.
type in: CheaTR cam ls1tech.com
Inputs like the above mentioned will get you on the right track until our search feature is back up.
The CheaTR will work well in your application. If you're running manifolds, you want something with very little overlap like this grind.

nope not worth it, you will be leaving at least 15-20 rwhp or more on the table depending on what sized cam you go with. There are cams that will work pretty damn well on stock exhaust manifolds but headers will help even those cams breath better. You can still have a relatively quiet setup with headers, all you need to do is run some good flowing high flow cats and then pick up a stock z06 titanium catback and you will have a very quiet setup. How much power are you looking for?

Yeah, thats a third on the CheaTR. I am pretty sure it was designed to run on a stock motor. Dont get me wrong, all the supporting mods WILL net you higher gains. Reguardless. But the CheaTR will work.

Can a cam without headers work?
YES if the cam has the right VEs. I got one of my own design in my Vette and I got 29 rwhp out of it. (32 on a good day)
Would the same cam benefit from headers?
YES any cam would benefit with headers, but if that is not an option then it will still work.
The trick is the RIGHT VE's

You don't mention anything about how you plan on using the car, and what you expect to gain. Headers will make the car noisier, and produce more under hood heat. If you're ok with that, consider headers, though the cost will be a significant addition to the cost of just a cam. You might consider Z06 cast iron headers; they have heat shields, will be quiet, less prone to leaking, and have a tri-Y type design as used on a 405HP motor. Under $100 on Ebay. Perhaps some will claim you won't realize much gain from them, but I read (don't recall where just off hand) that Z06 headers vs. tubes was a very small gain on a stock cammed car after a tune. Just a thought.
