Default Understanding gears.. a newb's quest.

Okay guys and gals, I have been doing some research on on things in my quest to make a car do 300 miles per hour, and still be a street legal vehicle, and right now I need to figure out the gearing.

I have no idea how to read gears in the format of 1.) 3.678 2.) 3.003...etc. Final) 2.509

I beleive that that has a direct connection to my tire speed of 72.666 rps.

But without understanding it and being able to change it, I have no reason to go forth with this.

So I'm asking for help on learning what a 3.5 rearend does and everything else in there.

Posts, links, images, books, will all be gladly accepted as help!

THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!
