You taller drivers . . . +6'2" inside please
I had NO IDEA where to post this question so here goes.
How would one go about extending the steering column so the steering wheel is 4-6" closer to the driver?
Being tall with long legs kind of limits seating position.
It's a major PIA to find a perfect "battle-stations" seating position without sitting Indian style while driving
I imagine this modification would involve mostly custom work . . . just wanted to know if anyone else did it and what did you do?
Thanks!

Im 6' 2" also. Sometimes I do with the seat would just go back like one more inch but then i would be sitting in the back seat. I just play with the wheel tilt and the seat tilt and height. Keep playing with the switches you'll find your sweet spot.

i'm 6'2 and i stap into that thing like i'm strapping into a fighter, nice and tight. i like not having to lean up a little bit to hit fifth or reverse. i just raise the wheel before i get out and lower it back down to drive, it helps out a ton.

You've had that car how long and you still can't get comfortable? 'course, not all of us have a 60" chest...
I'm about 6'4" in shoes, ~215lbs. The more I drive the crew cab the harder it is to unfold from the Camaro, though. I basically have a pre-flight checklist:
- right elbow at a 90* angle while holding onto the shifter in an even gear
- left wrist rests on top of steering wheel with left elbow slightly bent
- seat bottom tilted to avoid pressure on the bottom of the thighs but still be supportive
- seat back tilted as close to vertical as I can and still be able to see part of the hood with a helmet
Driving barefoot will save you an inch

LOL!!!
Jim I knew I posted this in the wrong section with the myriad posts that didn't even address the question Minus your informative post btw
Guess everybody else missed the AutoX/RoadRace part
I've been driving bare foot for years in order to get the most consistency but you know as well as I that we are "required" to wear proper footwear for racing
Gentlemen, I'm more than comfortable driving my car for almost 6 years now; but, as I stated, the question was RoadRace related.
I'm a hair over 6'2" and 250 lb. with a 35" waist and, as Jim pointed out, I have an "athletic" build Although not quite a 60" chest
My inseam is less than 33" and my arm length is perfect for my height but my back-width/chest-size/leg-size etc. make for interesting racing proportions.
I have the top of the line leather and suede Recaro Sport Topline Racing seats; fully adjustable, yada, yada.
To get more to the point than my original post: for my legs to be at the perfect bend for heel-toe, high-g corner shifting my arms are almost fully extended on the steering wheel (which I plan to replace with a Faster Sparco steering wheel when I modify the steering column).
If my arms have the ideal bend on the steering wheel when in the upright position for RoadRacing, then my legs are bent farther then is optimal for said extended racing.
Just to asuage everyone else's concerns and or jibes, my seating position is MOOOOORE than comfortable for everyday driving and 1/4 mile, or 1 mile drag-race stints
Jim . . . how's the ride? Get out to the Cross' lately?
I was out your way last weekend on business and visited a nice little bar called The Dollhouse

Being 6'9" and well built I just angle the seat as far back as possible and lean back. When I get some more funds I'm upgrading to some Corbeau's or Sparco and set the seat further back. I've actually tried it kindof...I took the stock seat out and just sat on one of the bucket seats I removed from the rear. Gives a whole different driving experience. Nice to stretch the legs.

Just to update one final time: turns out I won't have to modify the column.
Sparco is sending me the hub I need for my wheel of choice along with a 2" spacer; voila! Problem solved
