Exhaust housing types (t4/t6, on center, gt, tang) and AR ratios have a huge part in determining how a turbo will spool not to mention manifold design. my same gt37r on a .63 housing spools a full 1000rpm faster than my 1.01 housing, but the larger housing will flow more at higher pressure ratios, it's trade off.

this was from a guy who dyno tested both turbos on the same set-up.....the point is ...is that one brand turbo is better that the other, giving the same set-up, and i wounder which brands are better in what areas like a pt91 vers turbonetics 91 or a yk2 88 vers a s88

your comparing apples to oranges, you have to look at both the compressor and turbine maps to figure out wich on ewill fit your aplpication best.
example, a gt42r is rated at 1200hp it is designed with high reving High Pressure ratio 4cyl in mind. it hits peak efficiancy in the 2.5:1 island, for a ls1 running the same turbo would be far less efficient.

the point is from one companys turbo to another which either spools faster and or make more power, giving all else is the same.....

Keep in mind that there are some pretty exotic turbochargers out there.
The ceramic twin scroll ball bearing turbochargers are the latest technology. Although I heard they were working on a variable scroll turbocharger that initially will send high velocity air to the wheel to get it moving more quickly and then open up fully when fully spooled.

Ceramic turbine wheels have very low inertia and therefore spool more quickly. You also need to make sure you're not choking your motor at higher RPMS with back pressure from smaller undersized turbos which spool quickly but at the cost of backpressure.
I hope you're willing to pay through the nose because the exotic turbos are pricey.

Jesse I've heard pretty much the same thing, that my GT47-88 does not spool as fast as a Y2K 88. I'll be interested to see what other folks say. What turbo are you running again?

I can fit a bigger turbo in place of my 47-88, but there's no point since I have not come even close to maxing out my combo and I don't feel that my engine will like it and be a surge monster.

i figured since the y2k88 is only 150hp more than the pt88 then ill go even bigger, and since ballbearing are now making turbos spool alot faster, that a 91 probably won't be much different then an pt88 spool wise. also if i only wanted alittle more power i can use the bottle and just rebuild my pt88, but i would like more power and better spool with out the bottle.... i would leave your set-up alone too..you got alot more in it!

Fastest spooling, most powerful unit will be the new Garrett 88DBB. Jose and Jason are working on getting some modded versions finished . No pricing is yet available, but they are going to be awesome units.

If you go 91, then the T-netics 91 is the quickest spooling unit right now available. But look for a Garrett 91DBB unit coming as well. Jose and Jason are working on that one too.....lol. I know some parts arrived this week for them. So we will see.
