Default Spring recommendation for cam?

cam is tsp's 233/239, .595"/.603"... the comp 918 springs are rated to .600 lift so theyll work but is it recommended for daily driver use? i rarely see track time, and never race on the streets, i just dont want the springs to be a weak link in the valvetrain... would i be better off spending the extra 100 bucks and going with springs rated at .660 lift?

thx ahead of time

Patriot gold springs would suit you just fine. Seems like the failure rate for most of the gold spring kits vs. cost of most of the others is a no brainer for the normal .600 type cam.

since you mentioned comp, ill throw this at you. there isnt any reason you cant run a 918, the only problem with using that spring for regular street use is the open pressure at 0.600". if youre not revving the crap out of your engine, your best bet would be to keep the conical spring and use comp's 915. you wont need to change anything else.

the only thing i would recommend is a 0.015" shim under it for a bit more pressure.
your installed height should be 1.800", that will bring it to 1.785" and increase closed pressure by ~5 lbs and open by ~10-15 lbs which is perfect for your application

comp 915/918 springs coil bind at 1.140., your 1.785-.603(ex. lift)=1.182 1.182-1.140=.042 that's a little to close for me. .050 min. putem in at 1.800 or use a different spring. may i suggest crane #144832-16. 1.800 inst. ht. at 112 lbs. on the seat, also good to .650 lift w/.060 coil bind clearance. hope this helps.

Dual springs are a bit heavier, but I like the extra protection they offer. I didn't have a huge choice in springs for my cam (.650 lift), but I went Patriot Golds ($256 shipped from BYUNSPEED ) Depending on the cam's LSA, that 233/239 cam is going to want to rev decently high, so I'd go with a bit better spring that maxing the spring out (like you would the 918s).

Well ****. I just installed my tsp 233/239/ .595"/.603" 112LSA last night with comp 918's. Here is a snip from texas speeds description of the 918's:
"The 26915 and 26918 Valve Springs are specifically designed for the LS1 Chevrolet cylinder head and can be used as stock replacements or in performance applications all the way up to 0.625” lift and at engine speeds to 7500 RPM."

I think they'll be fine or else I wouldn't think TSP would allow you to order the 918 camshaft package with that cam. We'll see how well they hold up though, aren't the 918's pretty well proven springs?

Hmmm interesting, I've only ever heard .600" lift. Yes, they are good springs, I'm just a dual spring band wagoneer because I like the extra spring in case there is some sort of issue. The tiny lightweight retainer on the 918s keep a very light valvetrain on the other hand.

as long as they went in at 1.800 (+/-) a little, you should be fine. with pushrod defelction, lifter bleed and other things happening, you should be okay.
