That plastic piece is to connect the Drive Shaft to the Oil Pump. You press them together. I got the Melling Drive Shaft, it is all metal.
The easiest way for the pickup is to put it on, make sure it is about 1/4-3/8 inch from the bottom of the Pan, mark it and then have it welded. Just put a couple of little tacs in it, so it stays on and doesn't move. I did that to mine, it's a little insurance that can save your motor.

Thanks man, Yeah i plan on gettin the pick up tacked after its pressed in into the pump itself just for peace of mind. Where did you get the metal drive shaft from and do you have a part number by chance?

I went to Autozone, look up a Melling Oil Pump(I have that also), and the Drive Shaft is listed below it. It was like $7.
This is from shbox's website, check it out..

Cool. They work alot better. I trust steel over plastic anyday..expecially when they are getting heated up. The last thing I want is the Oil Pump to **** out.
