Default New Era Performance

I did a search and didn't come up with anything. Anyone hear anything about the Hellion cam from New Era Performance? 244/248 .630/.630 cam and is on a 110 LSA. They claim 450rwhp with stock heads and bolt ons. Seems like a pretty radical street cam.

yeah, not a good street cam, generally speaking. Low end will pretty suffer greatly.

Good shop, but not a good street cam if youre looking for drivability. Probably on par with a t-rex. Thats fine if thats what youre looking for. Many people do drive giant cams on the street, but its certainly not for everyone.

The hellion cam is pretty aggressive and does put out better numbers across the board over a T-rex. It is driveable on the street, much more than you would think because of the unique lobe design. We have 3 or 4 local guys that have them and drive their cars 3-5 days a week to work and to cruise nights etc. You would be real surprised as to how good these cars fire up after a big cam like this is installed. We do have other cams, so give us a call if you have any more questions.

The power range of that cam is 3300>7500 rpm
It also needs heads with at least a 70% ratio int/exht
and will require springs that can handle in the 160 lbs on the seats.
Also, Morel, Cadi or LS7 lifters required.
Face it, it is a drag cam.

That looks like a great 402/408 cam

New Era Performance is a great shop and those guys really know thier stuff. I wouldn't hesitate to call them and order any of thier products. Just be realistic and honest about how streetable you really are looking for and I'm sure they'll hook you up with the right cam for your goals.

Good luck.

I had new era performance install a hellion with headers and other suppporting mods in my ss last summer. it is a little unstreetable but it makes great power. Why are you changing the cam anyway? to make more power, so who cares if it surges a little a low speeds? hit the gas more or hit the clutch and it stops. Also, the low end issue is a bit noticeable, but it doesnt really matter because when the car hits 3500 or so it feels like someone turned on a switch and the thing takes off. Overall, great cam. New Era did a fast, professional install. Tune came out perfect. Starts and idles like a normal cam, minus the choppy idle. Never had an issue.
Results

390 RWHP
365 RWTQ
this is with stock LS1 intake, stock catback, stock heads. headers, ory, ported tb, and underdrive pulley were the only mods at the time.

You can get 390 rwhp and 390 rwtq with a much smaller, more streetable cam.

It has a ton left in it. He has stock heads, intake and exhaust. He is killing the cam by not letting it breath.

exactly. its a bit of a bad combo still, but Im sure he is goin to continue adding mods until its all there and ripping cars apart. 4" catback, LS6 intake (I just dont think the fast is worth the monly), and some 4.10 gears with either a good clutch or 4000 stall and he'll be hitting around 420RWHP and low-mid 11's w/o heads. once he has a nice set of heads look out.

Thats exactly the plan. I dont have the money to do it all at once, so it is done piece by piece. This year will be the heads/intake year if I dont sell it, next year 12 bolt with 4:10's and slicks, etc. My point was New Era does awesome work and even with the cam being so big it has pretty decent street manners. Once all the work is done, the car will run really well.

yeah thats how I feel about things too. no point in installing a smaller cam that might work better NOW but will have to be swapped out later.
good luck.

Yup - the gang at New Era is a great bunch.

I just got my car dyno tuned at the shop today, the trans am runs much cleaner & more powerful.

Thanks guys!
