Default LQ9 shortblock @ 7K RPM

I'm in the process of buying a stock shortblock LQ9 and putting my MS3 cam, lifters and stock 241 heads and oil pan/pick-up tube from my '00 LS1 on the stock engine. My question is if you think the LQ9 will be fine for this. Car is an A4 with a Yank 4400 and 4:30's. Car pretty much sees only track use. I have a set of ARP rod bolts here too. Should I go ahead and install those while it's easy to do, or just leave it alone? Don't want to have issues with this motor, car is about to get the best of me as it is. Also, what about the tune? Will it matter about the extra cubes with everything else staying the same? Thanks for any info.

yea man it def. needs to be tuned. if you have the rod bolts and motor out i don't see why it would hurt to stick them in there. i don't think that cam is gonna pull the 6L to 7k though, especially with stock heads.

You will need a tune, I would install the rodbolts, and it will go to 7k.

Yea, talked to TSP today. They said it should be fine to drive around for alittle while until I can get the car down to Texas for a dyno tune. The car has already been tuned for the current mods, the only difference is the added displacement. I think the shift points are at like 6.5K or 6.6K and limited at like 6.8K, I think. Probably go ahead and put the rod bolts in. I was just wondering if the bottom end was strong enough to hold together in a racing environment as opposed to pulling trailers... Thanks.

do Katech rod bolts IMO. but definatly do rod bolts while the motor is out. with the extra 10ci i dont think the tune will be a huge deal.

for heads you should put some 243 heads on it... even if they are just stock ones, its a great $350 mod... MLS headgaskets and ARP head studs..

Well, I would but I've already got the ARP's out of the 70 mile engine I "tried" to rebuild.... But anyways, I'm planning on going with the new L92/L76 setup later down the road, just ready to hear my car run again... Definatly going with the ARP head studs this time though. Got another question. The motor is coming out of a junkyard type place. The engine was pulled and is being kept in a warehouse. The guy said it's out of a '05 escalade and it's a LQ9. But the ticket says 99 LQ9. I already gave him my deposit so I could pick it up this Friday, but want to make sure it's an '05. Suppose to have 8K on the clock, hard to belive a 99 could have that.. The casting number is: 12551364 and it has the 317 heads on it. Couldn't see the top of the engine to look at the valley cover. Is there another way I can tell I'm not getting the shaft?? Thanks. Don't know what I would do without LS1tech.com

I don't think the LQ9 came out until '02. The 317 came on all the 6.0l the only way to tell if it's a lq9 is to check if it's got flat tops. I believe in 2004 GM changed all the motors over to the better connecting rods that only the lq9 came with previously. I hope this helps a little.
