Rollbars... Are they safe for the street?

Rollbars... Are they safe for the street?
Didn't know where else to ask this... Here's my question:
I have the same roll bar as is in this pic:
I'd post my own pics but still can't find my camera ...
Anyways, look how close the car comes to your head !!! I'm afraid that if I were rear ended my head could get whipped back into it...
Are these made only for racing when you'd be wearing a helmet? Should I pad it? Any input is appreciated...

This is the issue that Ive been dealing with on my 87. Im 6'4, and the way my car runs, I WILL need a bar/cage at the track. Unless I want to sandbag every race.
All of the pre-fabbed kits seem like they want the main hoop in a position that would be right against my head. So Im trying to figure out a way to install it so that its back far enough for my driving position. At the track I dont mind being up alittle and sitting more straight up. But for daily driving I gotta be comfy.
The only thing holding me from getting a cage kit and having at it is just the fear that I wont be able to make something work the way I want.

I take it this is a problem because of your height? If not, and you can avoid rolling with the "gangsta lean" :jester: then maybe you should start there. I'm just saying this because I knew a guy who was like 5'9" and he used to drive with the seat all the way back in his Nova that had a bar, and hit his head on it once. Then again, that kid had nooo common sense.

Pad it, alot.
Some cages mostly more so the "show" cages or 4 pointers I wouldn't run ever, but really if it's safe or not depends on how the cage is setup. You will be at more risk for hitting your body on it but have a safer, legal and hopfully stronger car due to it.
Padding really is the best thing you can do, I know it doesn't look as cool but well function > fashion.

keep in mind that roll bar padding was designed to protect a helmeted head from contacting the bar. The main hoop of the rollbar should tuck behind the b-pillar. A lot of off the shelf cages dont do that because theyre designed around the back seats. I personally think that when your at the point of throwing a roll bar in your car your also at a point where having a back seat shouldnt be an option.
