Default Going from a 2 series to a 3 series

I curently have a 2 Series and I bought 3:42's for a 3 series not knowing that I had a 2 series so now I have to switch to a 3 series. I bought the gears on e bay so I can not just take them back and get them for a 2 series. Are these the correct replacements that I would need, and would it make a difference what spline axle I have?

You just need 3 series posi differential for your 3 series gear. You can either get them new or used.

I think it would be better if I went with the second link (I posted above) I think it would be a better choice. I just need someone to varify that this is all I need. I am second guessing my self after buying the wrong gears, but also does the spline number matter?

Both would work, you might also go ahead get the install kit.

if your car does not have TCS you will also need a 3 series reluctor for the carrier.

there is an adapter, but i hear its crap, i have no experiance using this though, maybe someone else will chime in

my suggestion though.... ebay the 3.42's and just get a new set of 3.73's for a 2 series... much less hassle and 3.73's are better for an Auto then 3.42's anyway.. plus new gears have much less of a chance to whine. Invest in the install kit and the PCM speedometer calibration, if you havent had the PCM calibrated you can even do like i did, buy a 160 thermostat and just mail your PCM out to have them reset the speedo, adjust air/fuel, fan settings, remove torque management. If your car is stock now, the biggest three things you can do for under a grand is Gears, Lid & PCM tune, your car will feel totally different, i dont know what you have into it so far though, im just sayin if its relativly stock, if you need a reccomendation of where to send your PCM too PM me

My car does have the traction control and I just have a lid, bellow, mass air, filter, tune, and catback. I was planning on gettting it retuned when I got new gears. The gears that I bought are new, not used. Just to clear this up the links I posted are going to work, right? What about the spline # is that correct to? Do I have a 28 or how can I tell?

you have 28 splines, i just do not see why you dont just sell, return, exchange (whatever ya gotta do) the wrong gears for the correct gears and avoid a $240 used carrier... i mean, you can do whatever you want but the easiest way to go is to buy the correct gears

sell your 3 series gears and order 2 series set. Plus, the added bonus is your ring gear is thicker. Oh..I went from 2.73s to 4.11s. Get ready for absolutely NO traction. But there fun!!!!

I think I found what I need so please check this and tell if it is. This is the right 2 series gear, right? If this is put in right there will be no sound right?

Looks good. If they are not setup properly, they will whine. So, make sure its dont correctly or you'll be dealing with some annoying whine. I dont mind it to much, drowns out the wife when driving.

because normaly the ring gear registers on the posi, its a press fit to keep it concentric, i dont know if the spacer has a register to keep the ring gear concentric on the spacer. In other words, you press fit the ring gear on the posi for the soul purpose of insuring its concentric. There is clearance on either side of the ring gear bolts, sooooo if the spacer does not have a register on it for teh ring gear (which I dont think it does) there is no way of making sure the ring gear is 100% concentric. Maybe someone else would know, I have never even seen one, but I would imagine that is the problem, do you have a pic?

im in the same boat your in man....i order these gears from SLP not knowing the difference in carriers and what not...well they send me a 3.42 gears for a 3 series and i have 2 series ...i was told if i get the spacer it could work...well i called them and they said that its gonna make my rear end like glass...then i was like what if i order gears for a 2 series carrier....he says im still walkin on glass....so he tells me to order a 3 posi traction unit...some ratchet piece then im good to go....it'll be converted over to a 3 series and it will be alot more dependable....but im gonna say screw it and order 3.42's for a 2 series and if it goes...then it gives me an excuse to get a 12 bolt

there is nothing wrong with 2 series 3.42's or 3.73's you aint walkin on **** that route, sounds like he just wants to sell you a $400 posi. The spacer on teh other hand... i dunno
