REAL difference in power between these two exhaust setups...
I keep hearing everyone talking about how duals make more power and everything, but I don't see all of them running faster times or anything than the guys with Y/catbacks.
I am trying to decide between changing my TSP ORY to a custom one made with a flowmaster 3" in/4" out merge or getting 2.5" custom true duals with an x-pipe over the axle put on.
How much difference would there REALLY be in power/times between the custom Flowmaster merge Y/Hooker catback and the custom 2.5" X-pipe over the axle?
It's a tough decision because I would like to get the duals, but they are going to cost me at least $850 here, and the custom Y will cost me just over $100 (maybe $150 at the most) and I am a college student right now.
Thanks

I keep waiting for someone to do an a/b test also. as in dyno with ypipe/catback, then remove and install the duals and retest same machine, same day. I really want to do the test myself, but aint sure if I'll have money to spend on the car this year after my dynotune.

honestly exhaust is whatever, the gains you get are not INSANELY different. start talking gains when you start going with cams/heads/intake what not. only reason i got duals was for a good sound. but sure i got a few ponies because i got rid of a catted y pipe and catback..

I'll offer up my personal track experience. I went at the end of the year (nice sunny, 50* day, altitude of 900ft above sea level) with SSRA, lid, longtubes, and TD's. Other mods were drag radials, predator canned tune, stall, sfc's, lca's and 3.73's. I bested a 12.56 ET.
Fast forward through winter....only difference was I went to an ORY/Magnaflow catback setup and I had a slightly better tune (EFI Live w/ WBO2 - more accurate AFR and no more KR). All year, I couldn't get below a 12.7...even on the sunny, 40~50* days.
Take it with a grain of salt as this was only 1 person's experience. Either way, .2 tenths on a drag strip is hardly enough to seperate the men from the boys until you start talking John Force numbers IMO...

Well I will be going with a cam next year so I need to have the exhaust ready for that. I guess now that I think about it, I would be able to sell my Y/Hooker for about $350 so it would only be around $550 for the final price for the duals, but it would only be about $25 or something for the Y with the Flowmaster merge.

If you are going to merge backdown to a 3" catback without a cutout, you'll loose some of the gains of a good Y-pipe. You might consider selling the hooker and going 3.5" all the way. The hooker will cover buying a 3.5" muffler and tubing.
Also don't forget to net the sale of your hooker against the cost of doing True Duals as part of your comparison.
I like duals best and if you are going to go max effort over a period of a couple years, do it the best, each step of the way. On the other side, if budget is tight, putting the savings into a cam will get you the most performance per dollar spent.

I started a thread like this one. I think the closest data your gonna get is from lsx where he went from stock y-pipe,stock cats, and after market catback to high flow cats, and duels. He gained almost 20rwt but lost 1rwh. I myself dont credit the full 20rwt to the duels because he also installed high flow cats and got rid of the flat restrictive stock y-pipe.
Now, what we need to see is a comparison from a car thats has this - after market y-pipe,and after market catback to duels. I bet the gains would be minimal if any at all.
heres that thread...... https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthrea...ght=scavenging

I just had another thought. I wonder if the guy at the shop would take the flamoster merge with the 4" out into a 4" pipe with a Borla XR-1 muffler in it (the same that I wanted in the Duals) over the axle and out the back in two probably 2.5" pipes. I could use a 3.5" too if he says the 4" is too big to fit over the axle.
How do you think that would sound and flow? The 4" would flow more than 2.5" duals, and the 3.5" would be almost the same, just a touch less. I don't know how loud it would be with only 1 XR-1 instead of 2 in duals. It wouldn't cost as much as duals either I wouldn't think.
What do you think of that idea?

i think its a great idea. i'm going with a cam in the future so i'm trying to figure out what exhaust to up grade to also because my 3" is gonna start holding me back at around 370 hp. i'm either going with the bassani duels or gonna go ahead with a 3.5 or 4" catback. Your idea is good and it would definatly alow you to save $ and put it elswhere where it will show more

If you have a stock or bolt on car your gains will be minimal and may even lose on the low end, if you have a big cube highly modded motor that moves a lot of air you could pick up 40+ Rwhp.

i got my td's on and noticed a bigg difference in power.. im running 2.5 out the back under the axle with magnaflow bullits...sounnddsss amazinggg.. and it shouldnt cost you 850...you can buy a td's set up for around 400 then have them extended or have a shop custom make you a set up for prob 4 or 500...well worth it to me

Hmm... I guess I need to call some places farther away then. Nowhere in town will do them that cheap.
Unless bigger name places like Beck muffler and places like that would do it. I haven't talked to them yet. Do you think they would do it? If you do, do you think it would be good quality and cheap enough to even ask about?

$4-500 is a pretty typical price up here in mi. too for dumped exh. the last one a friend had done a couple years ago was $280 plus the cost of 2 mufflers. and Id expect to pay around $200 additional for the rear pipes to go under the axle and out the back. depending on the tips ofcourse.

Well the shop here told me it would be about $600 + mufflers/tips to go over the axle and out the back. But then the XR-1s I want are $110 a piece... so $220 on top of that + tips... Thats where I said at least $850 from.
Are there any other mufflers that are similar to the Borla XR-1s that are cheaper? I like the sound of those as far as I can tell so far. Deep and not too loud at idle/cruising, but can get loud when you get on it.

Right now I have the Hooker tips that came with my Hooker catback.
What would be a good substitute for the Borla mufflers? Do any other ones sound similar?

A freind of mine with a simmilar engine picked up 44 Rwhp by changing from the Borla cat back to 3" true duals no X or H pipe and Dynomax bullets with dumps. I have since gone with the same set up on mine and picked up an amazing amount of power over the factory Mecham cat back. I have made too many upgrades to pin point the exact gain from the exhaust alone but I can say its one of the best mods I have done to complement my combo.
My set up cost me $275 complete.
