241 vs 853 heads
What are the difference between these two heads
which is better and by how much?
I have a 2000 Z28 with 853's on them now replacing head gasket and have both heads available to me

There's maybe a 5hp difference if that. There were several reasons the cars that had 241 heads (2001 & 2002) made more power besides just the heads.
This has been debated many, many times recently. I know that I've personally chimed in five or so times in the last ~six weeks.
If you could swap out to the 241s or keep your 853s, install which ever set had the least amount of miles on them, or have someone port the 241s and then install them.

I'm betting you didn't do that.

It's a time bomb with those darned 853 castings

It was a joke guys, and also to my knowledge no cars were made in Mexico. There is hardly a difference in cylinder head flow between a 853/241 casting, so make your own conclusions on how they will affect power. Also, there were no years that used a substandard bearing, or for that much no bearings at all.

My car is a 2000 camaro and was assembled in Canada, well I've got 853 since my car was one of the early cars, the later 2000, all of 2001 and 2002 have 241.
I've got a question, are the heads different from valve diameter? if I get 241's and 853's ported, will there be any difference?

Here is a quick breakdown on the heads guys:
97-98 Ls1's received the 806 Casting Heads
99-00 Ls1's received the 853 Casting Heads
01-02 Ls1's received the 241 Casting Heads
The flow rates among the heads is hardly worth the effort of swapping them for the "better" heads. It is stated that each set through the years flows better than the ones before. What makes the 01-02 cars stouter in most people's eyes is the fact that they have the Ls6 intake as standard equipment. It's not the heads it's the intake. Adding the Ls6 intake on Pre 01-02 cars has shown gains of atleast 7-10 rwhp in nearly every case it is installed. Also like stated above, go with the heads with the least mileage if both are unported. You will not notice the difference if they are the stock cut castings. If your a 98 car there is no point in swapping to the new heads for flow reasons because the later models use the center valve cover bolts compared to the perimeter bolts that the 97-98 cars use. In addition to that the coil packs also mount differently also and IMO it's not worth the trouble to swap up to the 99-02 heads unless they have been ported.
