MAF screen
I have a 99 ls1 t/a and was thinking of removing the screen in my MAF. Is it alright if I do this or am i going to have to make calibration changes. Wasn't sure if it was need to strighten the air flow or not on the ls1 motors.
anyone done this??????

I wouldnt recommend it becuase your not picking up substantial HP. When I put my ported TB my MAF screen had a few pieces of debris on it ( a small leaf, a few peices of grass). Granted these things arent going to lock up my engine, Id still rather keep stuff like this out. Im not real sure how how this stuff gets up in there but none the less it does. Just my .02

if your going to de-screen it, your gonna want to re-tune it, or at least add fuel in your PE mode. but if you are already running rich its gonna lean you out prolly by .1 or .2 AFR

Don't do it. That screen straightens the airflow path going across the MAF wires. Altering the MAF may create a leaner AFR calculation and lead to incosistent fueling. Most people won't notice a difference for two reasons: 1) While under light~moderate throttle, the car adjusts incorrect fueling based on oxygen sensor feedback. 2) Most people can't tell the difference between a 12.8:1 AFR and a 13.8:1 AFR in their "butt" dyno. But, running a motor that lean can lead to long term troubles. That's my $0.02 at least...

I dont understand what you think Im saying. I descreened it and found no noticable gains or hinderances. I wouldnt do it again, it seemed like a waste of time to me.

Descreening might only add HP on the upper end of your RPM Range.. for Daily Street Driven car.. it is not worth the effort.
As far as wanting more Turbulant, the Intake system is design to add all the turbulant is need itself (if any) and Since the Fuel is not added until it enter the head, where the injectors are, air turbulant is not really needed and might hurt HP. The Intake manifold is really trying to straigthen out the air flow before going into the heads. This is a dry system !

anything in the way of flow is a restriction. since i been around GMs all my mafs been descreened and never had an issue. talking close to 100k in miles and nothing. for the time it takes its not bad of a mod.
its in the same park as TB coolant bypass and etc
every 1hp adds up in the end

To tell the average owner to go out and pull the screen out of their MAF is wrong. The car wasn't setup with it that way and most people don't own their own tuning software. If you do pull the screen, it's virtually required to change the MAF table in the PCM. This is because the result of pulling the MAF screen is...you alter the airflow across the MAF leads/wires. That change will alter fueling calculations. It could make the car run slightly richer, but in most cases it leans the car out. That's where the extra HP comes from. The problem lies in the fact that many (not all, but many) bolt-on cars run lean without a tune. This is because the PCM can't measure AFR's at WOT. As I said before, light~moderate throttle is where the PCM can compensate with fuel trims. Those corrections *might* carry over to WOT and help to keep you from leaning out.....but, then again they might not. So, if you want to potentially lean out your AFR and run a lean 13.8:1 at WOT, be my guest. But, don't come crying to me when things go wrong.
As for the Z06 MAF not having a screen...it was tuned from the factory that way. It's not like it was tuned with the screen and then had the screen removed.
So to sum up:
Pulling off the screen without retuning the PCM - potentially BAD
Running a MAF without a screen - OK if tuned properly
