How do you take a balancer off if engine is out of car?

How do you take a balancer off if engine is out of car? Say you have an engine sittin out of the car WITHOUT the tranny bolted to it. How do you take the harmonic balancer off the engine? Obviously when you try to take balancer bolt out the whole crankshaft and everything will turn. How in the hell do you keep everything from turning? Sorry guys im kinda new to this stuff. thanks.
