I've heard the D shape flows better. Less turbulance. Ever notice the jet engines on some passanger planes mounted under the wings, the bottom is kinda flat, also D shaped.

FYI. The D-shape exhaust for jet engines are not for flow, they are for ground clearance for takeoff rotation, or in some cases, noise control.

Sorry to break you the bad news.

I thought it built exhaust velocity?

D shape insures flat floor, which minimizes pinch of flow as it turns in port.It does this because flat floor reduces corner radius's of floor area. Total flow dictates whether roof of exit can be round like in D shape or more square for max volume flow like AFR style exhaust ports for SBC. Square or rectangle type exits have roof section of port mirror shape of short side. This flows the most generally speaking, but other things come into the equation also. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

That explains why GM went to the D-port for the LS6 when they smoothed the short turn radius from the LS1 shape.
