When was the last time the car had a tune up? What is the condition of the plugs, wires, and O2 sensors?
Did it just recently start doing this? Or has it progressively gotten worse?
What type of driving triggers it?
We need a lot more info before we can even remotely give you some feedback.

They should make the check engine light come on if that bad. I had a left bank go out and it smoked like a train, at the same time i had an opti harness go bad, it would just cause the car to go dead but the bad O2 screws up the fuel air mix. Anytime you change to headers the coating can burn off inside and foul the O2 sensors, I believe that is what happened in my case, hope this helps. Also your car will probaly run rich anyway if you haven't tuned after the mods.

Similar problem
I have a 93 TA with a similar problem. I don't have soot on my bumper but my exhaust tips are covered. If I'm not running wide open it spits and sputters a bit. When I bought the car I was told that the chip had a "nitrous tune" so I figured that was why it was running a little rich. Is that possible? I'm brand new to computer tuned hot rods so I just took his word for it.

A good tune can make 15 to 25 hp difference depending on application. The car will still perform without the tune so it is not exactly ness. just to drive, your idle should not be stumbling though and drivability should be the same, LT1 run alittle rich anyway, and when LT's are added and ex. backpressure lessoned they seem to get richer.
