its not that bad of a car, all things considered. not counting the damage, it looks fairly clean and solid. youd have to check it out in person, but most late 2nd gens are rot buckets. even my 78 TA, which was in fantastic shape, needed every quarter fixed. 4900 is a little too much. 4000, provided it runs/drives/looks good, is alright. anything under 4 and its definetely worth it.

I bought my 79 firebird for 2300 and i love it. it originally had a 301 but before i got it it was swapped over to a chevy 350 and i am happy it was i acctually put a crate 350 in it and it runs like a champ. i think for all the money u would spend not only on the car but fixing it u would not be happy. just my opinion.

I used to have an 80 Turbo Trans Am.....and I would LOVE to find another one at a decent price (decent being....a price my wife won't kill me for)....
Here is my $.02
If you are looking for a high performance neck snapping muscle car.....don't even consider an 80 or 81 turbo TA (unless pulling the motor out and replacing it with a 400 or 455 is an option for you). As has already been pointed out.....they weren't powerful, and there are little to no aftermarket parts for the motor.
However.....if you like the looks of the turbo cars (and I REALLY do)....and are looking for something collectable....this looks like a pretty good car to consider. It would depend how solid the thing is...if you have to get into replacing panels...$4900 is too much IMHO.

Keep your current car. I love the 2nd gens, but that one looks like a lot of work. Not to mention, about 5 years ago I saw a turbo '81 in the local paper for $4k in about the same condition as that one.

www.transamcountry.com has quite abit of info on these cars. It's not the greatest powerplant but I do believe it was Motor Trends car of the year in 1980 when it powered the Pace Car. I think they are cool no matter what way they came.... after all, those years, there wasn't much in the way of hp from anyone. http://www.iwaynet.net/~gl&lisk/1980ta.html
