The owners manual has the info on downshifting/max speeds - I let the PCM shift the car.

You put the car in drive and go,if you want to drop a gear you give the car more throttle. Thats how auto tranny's work

Its been pretty much beaten to death that the 4L60E shifts faster in D than you doing it manually, but I sometimes throw it in 2nd around town because the speed limit is 25 and my car will idle at 30 in D, make it easier to keep my mind off of watching the speed.

so it means that its not possible to downshift from 4 th gear to 3rd {from d to 3} and only way to do it is push the gas harder....is that wut u are sayin ?

For normal weather conditions just put the thing in drive and forget the other ones. If you so excited about shifting yourself you should have bought a manual. It seems like my car "kicks" in when i have it in big D compared to little D

Whether it hurts the tranny or not is still an on going argument and it depends on who you ask. Really the only time I shift it manually is maybe messing around through town or something but not very often.

If I understand you questions . On A4 3rd should only go to 55 mph not 60-65 mph you should shift to drive before 60 mph .Sometimes i put the car in 3rd and hear the rpm higher then normal so I shift it to drive. The car with be fine. You can go 1 2 3 Drive why you do that i don't know. The car shifts better in Drive then you shifting. D 3 2 1 maybe not ok on trans . if your going fastest then 55 and shift D N 3 2 1 you can hurt the transmission. I did that once and it did feel or sound good. ooops. Now D to N is ok on trans if you slowing down .

i had issues with my old 4l60e on my 94 z28. I know I manually shifted alot cause it shifted like a sissy, but it still virtually played no role on its performance. Or at least that I could tell. It will shift into 3rd and 4th even if you leave it in 2nd

When I knew it was shot and was going to get it covered by the warranty cause it slipped alot. I left it in 2nd and went up to 85-90. I thought it was going to max out and stop at 2nd but it went ahead and shifted like it was in drive.

That was one of the reasons I got a m6 this go around. The only time Iw ould normally downshift was when I was stopping in snowy weather.

the lower gears are there for us people in mountain areas...if you are driving in an area where the tranny shifts up and down alot you can hold the gear by selecting the lower gear...if that makes sense to you....

dont try to manually shift the car while at WOT unless you like hearing the rev limiter....if you wanna shift manually have a transgo shift kit installed....

Use the "Shift by Foot" technology that came with the car. That's the gas pedal. You are not going to get a faster time by trying manual upshifts in a A4. You are probably going to hurt it. The A4 will 'shift & sh*t'. Go like hell and hang on. If you want to downshift you should get a manual.

Haha saying your girl cant drive a manual is like saying she cant take it in the ***. You just have to teach her

Seriously if they can figure out how to charge **** with a credit card and write checks they can learn to shift. It isnt hard and I am sure once she learns she will have a blast.

Ive known a few chics who like the manuals and well haha they rock. Its funny watching em throw it in nuetral at a light hit the brake and put on makeup.. then close it, drop it in 1st and roll on out
