Default Lid opinions vs. Newbie FAQ

Hey guys,

The newbie FAQ insists there is no difference in performance when it comes to various lids, but yet I read post after post saying the SLP lid is a mistake...what's the deal?

I have the SLP lid and havent had any problems at all. I know in the past couple months SLP has changed the lid for better fitment. Honestly its your call, everyone is going to have a different opinion.

I think the SLP lid is actually the lid of choice here....where have you been reading ? SLP gets bashed here because of prices and HP claims on other products but the lid has gotten many best fitment overall.

+1 If anything I've heard that the SLP lid is one of the better ones! I had one on my Z/28 and loved it! I have the MTI carbon fiber on my SS and it fits great also. The only lid that I have heard quite a few complaints on is the MTI clear lid.

GMHTP recently did an article in which they took about 8 different lids from different makers and dyno and track tested all of them. The SLP lid was one of the highest (if not THE highest) ranking ones. It's a good lid and I recomend it for sure, just keep the stock bellows. DO NOT GET THE SMOOTH BELLOWS!!!!

There's not going to be any performance difference, only differences in the way it fits.

The majority of people who have rubbing issues with the SLP lid also have a smooth bellows, that's what causes the problem.

The SLP lid is the lid of choice for most people, including myself twice with no issues.

Agreed!

I have been using my SLP lid for YEARS now on two different F-bods with ZERO issues with rubbing or fitment. I love it! It also matches the rest of the plastic under the hood better than any of the other lids IMO.

Hey isn't the smooth bellows part of that "Flow-pac" kit?

My SLP lid has a tendancy to pop off the metal brackets that hold it down. Usually I have to shove the crap out of it to get it to fit correctly whenever it gets taken off. It also has some small scratching on the top of it, making me think that it might be hitting my SS hood a little bit. Not really big problems, I'm been considering bolting the lid in place.

Cockerkid:

Was the install pretty easy for the flowpac setup? Where does the scoop mount exactly?

I did not buy the kit, but my Z/28 had the SLP lid on when I bought it and later on I bought the air duct and K&N filter which basically makes up the entire kit with the exception of the bellows (which I did not want)

The install is very simple. You just pull the air box assembly out and cut a whole in the bottom, slide the air duct in place, bolt everything else back in, and you got it (basically-that is kind of a cliff note version)

Just a word of advice though, a lot of people consider the air duct a waste of money. A lot of people just cut the whole in the bottom and leave it at that. It's called 'the free ram-air mod' and you can do a search for it. It's all over this site.

My Z/28 had the free ram-air mod when I bought it and there is no noticable performance difference after adding the air duct. I have the free ram air mod on my ss and I'm leaving it at that.

My recomendation is to get the SLP lid and cut the whole for the free mod and leave it at that. Save your money for something else like a ported TB or something small and cheap.

SLP lids are the best fitting and one of the best performing. i don't know why anyone would say that they are a mistake. if you are leary about SLP lids, you can go with an MTI clear lid - those are pretty sexy.

SpeedInc stocks both lids, (and the SLP flowpac) you can buy from them and have the lid in a couple days.

hope this helps!

the "scoop" for the flowpac kit bolts under the air lid - it runs parallel with the radiator.

Here you go. New Era is just one of many sponsors on this site that offer this service. Many folks here will tell you this is the way to go instead of spending $300+ on a new throttle body that will give you about the same performance.

Some guys with experiance in machine work do there own. Basically it is just 'eating' away at certain parts of the TB so it will flow better (again just cliff notes)

One thing that helped me really understand the process is to find some side-by-side before and after pics and compare.
