Default 243 Sodium Filled Valve ID (5 pics included)

I just bought a set of LS6 243 heads that are in pretty good shape. Link to heads.

How can I tell if they in fact do have the sodium filled valves?

Check out my pics of the heads in my garage from earlier this afternoon.

Thanks for any help you can give.

If you have any stock valves to compare them to, you can pull one of the light weight valves and weigh it then do the same to a stock valve. If you're talking about any physical differences though, I'm not sure.

LS2's use those heads too, and they dont have the LS6 vavles. but the LS6 vavles have longer vavle stems, because the LS6 cam had a smaller base circle

Is there a date code or something I can look at. Maybe one of those laser etched numbers on the head means something or will confirm these are LS6 heads.

Just pull a valve on throw it on a scale. The stock LS6 intake valves are under 100g I belive.

Yea, weight and length would tell you if these are "sodium filled" valves or not..
Just like vanilla89 said, not all 243 casting heads came with light valves...

I'm looking for a set of those valves myself....

I plan on installing a set of Comp Cams 915 or 918 springs so I guess at that point I can weigh the valves and hope for the best. According the guy I bought the heads from they were 04 LS6 heads so they should have the lightweight valves. Thanks for the help guys, at least I have some information to go on when it comes time to install springs. I will at least weigh the valves.

I just went out and spent some time cleaning the heads up a little. Looking for some kind of info that might give a hint to the age or build date of the heads. I found an 04 cast into each head. Could be nothing, could be something.

Both heads have green paint on them.

Anyway, they cleaned up really easy with Acetone in just a few minutes. Very little carbon build up on a few valves and it came off easily. I will disassemble the heads and have them hot tanked before installation still.

I have been told that the vavle stems on LS6 vavles are longer than the LS1/2's.
and I guess instead of putting longer push rods in, the base circle on the cam is smaller.

hope that helps

um the smaller base circle was compensated by longer pushrods.

The LS6 valves are longer than the standard LSX valve and the base circle of the cam was smaller. All stock LS motors use the same pushrod.

As long as you are not an internal engine component sponsor I guess we're safe.

Besides as mentioned with the weighing of the valve the only other way is to know the car they came off of. The ls6 sodium filled valves were only used in 2002, 2003, and 2004 Z06 243 heads.

I looked at a set of valves this morning. The 241 vs 243 valves looked to be the same length. I put them on a level surface and then put a digital level across the top and it was still level.

Have any LS6 valves around to measure? Which was that?
