Default Can I leave an O2 sensor installed but not powered?

I was going to permanently install my O2 sensor for my LM1 and then use it when I needed it, but the book says the sensor will be damaged if it is installed but not powered. Is this correct?
Thanks

You need to at least run the heater circuit on it. It will fail because of build up in the Cell.

It wasn't laziness, it was access. I was planning on locating it somewhere that would have been difficult to access, but easy to route into the cabin.
But thanks for the input, it is now easy to access.
