Default Stock timing chain with cam, anybody break it?

I know alot of people upgrade to the LS2 or double roller when doing a cam swap but honestly have many people really had the stock chain break? If so then what really makes them break? They don't seem to really have a problem with the stock cam so why would they with an aftermarket cam. Is it just the added RPM or something? I was just wondering. I have the stock chain and have never had any problem but I do have the stock rev limit.

when you have a big cam with huge springs to support the high lift, you have springs with a large spring coefficient.

This large spring coefficient over a high lift creates a lot of force.

when your lifter hits the lobe and travels up the ramp the timing chain has to pull on the cam gear pretty freekin hard in order to get the lifter to travel over the huge lobe to get the springs to compress.

when you're running a stock cam or a "smaller cam" i would think that the stock ls1 chain would be sufficient but who knows at what point it is no longer safe to do so.

just upgrade the chain to an ls2 for 30bucks!

It's only $30 for the LS2 chain. I would not even go that way. Get the double roller. Like sadi above. you are adding springs with increased pressure, this makes it harder to turn the gear. The added duration and ramp rate also increase the load on the chain.

Save $30 and spend $3K to replace the shortblock because a valve went through your piston.

They dont break too offten. What causes them to break is they just stretch and stretch and eventually come apart. Picking up an LS2 chain isnt that bad of an idea since they can be had for under 40 bucks.

well I still run my stock one because it didn't seem to have much slack at all. Maybe I should of changed it but I really didn't see a good reason to.

yes you can still run stock crank/cam gears with an ls2 timing chain.

And the chances of that are very slim. So, basically, no.

I've heard of more problems with the double roller setups than with the LS2 chains, personally. Maybe it's just coincidence.
