I have a 98 TA. I was thinking about getting the fast toys ram air. Have any of you guys had any problems with the FTRA setup?

I have one and haven't encountered any problems,
was pretty easy to install, and fit is very good.

i have one...i like it for the most part...Your air filter will get dirty a lot faster..but other than that no problems with it. I did have to remove the bottom scoop section so i could mount my transmission cooler...

Have had one for years, no problems. Thought there was room to mount a cooler beside it, mines mounted "dope" style so didn't matter.

I too plan to get one but I have a question, does it work as well for TA's as it does for camaro's since we don't have as much air flow in that region?

I guess I'm the only one to ever experience any problems with one. After I helped my buddy put one on his car it was just so much faster that everyone thought he had more done to his car than he claimed to have. It really turned people against us, because they thought we were lying. So I have to say that you shouldn't get a FTRA if you want to keep your friends. :fart:
On a serious note, When we installed the FTRA we cut the hole a little too big in the bottom of the airbox no way to completely seal it off. Went to the track and the car ran 13.2-13.4 @ 108 very consistently (about 20 passes or so). The next week we went to Lowes and bought some stuff to really seal it up good. The result was a 13.006 @ 111, with numerous 13.0-13.2 @ 110-111 mph. I'd have to say that ram air really works. This was on a 02 WS6 M6 w/ FTRA, lid, ported MAF and a 'dynamouth' exhaust. Also this was in cold February air, with similar temps and conditions on both weekends
On the street the results were also very evident. Another guy that also has an 02 WS6 M6. His mods were K&N FIPK and GMMG chambered exhaust. From a 20 roll the cars were dead even until they would shift to third. And the FTRA car would pull easily 2 cars in third and just walk away in forth.
I too plan to get one but I have a question, does it work as well for TA's as it does for camaro's since we don't have as much air flow in that region?
I believe that the air flow under the car would be roughly the same. And like I said above these were WS6 cars and it was that much improvement over their existing ram air. :hail: FTRA

Hi, I Was Wondering Does Anyone Have Instructions For Installing The Fast Toys Ram Air Intake??? I Just Picked Up For A Good Price But I Need Some Instructions And Some Install Pictures. I Had A Sight That I Found The Other Night And It Had Instructions And Pictures But My Printer Was Out Of Ink. I Bought A Ink Cartridge And Went To Print The Instructions And My 9 Year Old Son Deleted The Site. I Have A General Idea How It Goes But I Would Much Rather Get It Right The First Time. So Instructions And Pictures Would Be Great. Please Respond, Mike

Doesnt it (supposedly) create a fairly decent ammount of pressure at 80mph+ inside of the airbox?

i'm gonna throw a monkey in the wrench and say this.
the FTRA is a great piece....but i still perfer my SSRA.
i've only owned the SSRA....so i don't have much comparison...but then again, i'm sure most of you have only had the FTRA.
the SSRA is more expensive, but i feel the lower scoop is more effective.
and before anyone says it....i live in florida...land of hurricanes (RAIN)...never had a problem with water.
bottom line....either will work great

+1 for the FTRA, should be one of your first mods, makes one of the biggest differences for the price

i had one on my car, loved it. except one though a car wash the undercarriage sprayer soaked my filter, after that happened i bent a peice of sheetmetal to slide over the inlet.

you guys should make a plastic slip-on cover for the inlet with a quick fasten system so owners that still use auto car washes dont run the risk of ingesting water. i made a sheetmatel cover for mine but not everyone has access to a brake.

The kit comes with a block off plate already which serves that purpose :)

I have the SSRA and had the same problem. If you take the bottom piece out you techniquely have a cold air setup not a ram air set up. I was able to wedge the transmission cooler to the far left and put the bottom piece next to it. I put the bottom half of the SSRA right next to it. The transmission cooler does not move at all and it isn't even bolted in. It is a very tight fit. I picked up atleast .1 at the track.

^^^ you must have anti ass dyno seats . i noticed a difference in mine at higher speeds, IAT was also cooler.

Gotta ask this but in what way is the FTRA > free ram air mod? Is the incoming air really cooler? More forceful? Not being a smart ass, just asking..

well if the air lid is not tight, then there's going to be a slight power loss from air escaping at the cracks. same principles i guess when air is just being directed by the plastic air dam piece that's not sealed at all. the FTRA and SSRA (better) is funneling air more directly into the throttlebody.

The free air mod does not directly force air into the airbox by using the forward momentum of the car (ram air). This means that all the air that enters the motor is strictly due to engine vacuum (less efficient). The free air mod also draws air from directly in front of the radiator which is warmer than the air the FTRA draws from the bottom of the vehicle off the air deflector. Warm air = less power and less timing (which also equals less power).
Lastly, the free air mod is not capable of developing any positive pressure in the air box while the FTRA will achieve a small degree of pressurization at higher speeds improving the VE of the motor. Improve the VE of the motor and you get more HP and better fuel economy.
That's it in a nutshell :)

Good explanation thanks. Taking a guess here but VE stands for ________ efficiency?

Volumetric Efficiency (hope I spelt that right). Basically how efficient a motor is at pumpinr air or put another way, the relationship between theoretical displacement and how much air actual enters each cylinder.

+1 for FTRA - I felt it and it was a simple install, even for my very limited mechanical experience. As I understand it, the FTRA operates even more efficiently than the WS6 ram air set-up. Any comments?

Yes it will be more efficient than the WS6 ram air set-up. However, we realize some WS6 customers want to keep their hood functional so we offer the JAAM WS6 ram air kit as a good compromise that will still yield a performance increase and also improves the looks underhood :)

so for the ws6 guys, they can benifit from the ftra and the jaam?

12-12-2007, 11:43 AM
if you want your stock ws6 hood functional (use JAAM)
if you dont care, use the FTRA
I dont think you would want to use them together becuase it just wont work right.
Stupid question. Say someone wants to use the FTRA and not use the factory WS6 ram air, do you sell kits that have a larger seal to block off the front of the airbox since the ramair cars have an opening thats twice as big as the regular size boxes that camaros, adn base trans am's use?
Fast Toys Performance Parts
12-12-2007, 11:59 AM
You have to pick either the JAAM kit or the FTRA. Running them together will not help you any more.
The rubber seal we provide in the FTRA kit is 1/2" too short for the WS6 lower air box. We couldn't not find a one piece rubber seal tall enough. To make the kit work on your WS6 car, you either need to use a piece of thin plastic, tape, plexiglass or something else to supplement our seal to properly seal up the front of the air box. The goal is just to prevent air from escaping through the front of the air box.

You need to purchase the whole kit.
The SLP upgrade kit is only for people that purchased the metal SLP cold air kit which is different than a plastic SLP air lid which sits above the air filter assembly. If you need a further explanation, just give us a call and we would be happy to assist you.
Thanks

Yes, you would still buy the whole kit. The FTRA goes under your air filter. It has nothing to do with the lid.

How does the FTRA compare to the SLP version?
Fast Toys Performance Parts
12-16-2007, 05:28 PM
How does the FTRA compare to the SLP version?
The SLP kit is really only a cold air kit as it does not directly route air into the air box. The FTRA is a true ram air kit and brings cold, high pressure air right off of the lower air deflector on the car into a sealed air box. The FTRA also includes a block off plate to disable the kit, a removable front seal (the SLP is glued on) and provides superior sealing.
