My friend's 94 C4 has a Avg MPG reader, and he kept dumping it into 6th around 45-50. I told him that was just too low (and he's the real mechanic between us). I told him to try 5th up till around 55, and sure enough his avg MPG went up 2-3 when cruising around. 6th is just way tooo low for anything other than crazy high speeds or 70-80 cruising IMO.
But, I have an A4, so what do I know

I dont go into 6th intil 65-70mph. I still have 3.23's in the rear but its not as bad as people would think. Gas mileage is great in the hwy though, at 70mph im at 1350 rpm in 6th.

i believe if you dont have to put a load on the car, then you get better mpg using 6th around 50 mph. but if u hit a hill or something, shifting into 5th gets you better mpg

45 - 50 mph on my morning commute. Completely flat road and not much braking or acceleration involved. I usually wait slightly past 50 mph if the AC is on. FWIW, I've also tried cruising in 5th only but made no difference to mpg. I do it mainly for the noise though.
