Default What to use to hold up lifters?

Well I'm in the middle my cam install and everything is going fine until....I choose to use some rod's from Lowe's I bought, but they don't seem to be sliding in right. The driver side slides in with no problem, but the pass is giving me a little problem. Lifters 1 and 2 seem to be blocking the entrance of the rod. Any help guys?

I had the same problem, the rod actually has to be like v-shaped on that side. Dont force it, you could damage the lifter. I had to just spin the cam and hope on the passengers side.

What I did:
take a pushrod and rest it on each lifter. then spin the cam, watch the pushrod to see if it falls. None of mine fell so I just pulled the cam. If it does fall you could try magnets (although a member here just tried that and broke the magnet off and is now pulling the head) or you could go out and pick up a wood dowel (I assume you got the 5/16th metal rod?). then shape the dowel into a wedge shape. That should let you slip it into the passengers side.

It helps if you grind the end of the rod to shap it like a bullet. The blund end of the rod tends to get hung up easily.

can you hear the lifters fall? I did the dowell method last night and it went in pretty easily, now I have the rods back in place and they all look fine, any way to know for sure?

I used a metal rod on the drivers side and a wooden rod on the pass side.

Good luck.

alright. I got both of the wood dowls in but the push rods are still moving up and down. Is this normal? The rod size is 5/16. If so then it's a go! But I'm not doing anything until someone replys, thanks!

I have a JRP lifter tool, I would try to round the end of the dowl and use pen magnets to pull up the lifers that are hard to get by.

Here's what to do. First, realize the rods will keep lifters from falling but not falling down some so it contacts the cam.

With the cam still in the motor, remove your two rods.

Take a pushrod and push each lifter down onto the cam, note any that don't move much.

Now spin the cam again.

Re-insert rods.

Done! I can tell the rods are completely in because its hitting the back of the block. Also I can spin the cam for 5-7 revolutions and then it sounds like theres a lifter is falling. Kinda play with the rod and it goes away.

The rods hold the lifters at about mid lift. With the rods in you will have to spin the cam as you remove it because it gets caught on the lifters as it comes out.

There isn't an easier way IMHO, buying the expensive tool is a rip off.

It's in and alive! Sorry about the delay'd response, but been putting everything back together. Only thing that sucks is there is alot of valvetrain noise. But I'm 100% its because I need longer push rods. Thansk Again!
