so iam putting a stock cam in because mine spun so fast it made the cam bolts break off and the pin. So iam new to the whole cam thing. so what are the steps in putting a stock cam back in. Its on a 94 Lt1 Formula. Thanks a bunch Calvin.

don't have the money to put a cam in and its my daily driver. my friend gave me his stock cam so it didn't cost me. Well first i thought it was my timing chain. Then when i finnaly got the timing cover off. The bolts that hold on the Cam Gear. There was only one bolt holding it on when there is supposed to be 3. The other two broke in half in to the cam and the heads fell off into the oil pan. Hope its just the cam i need to replace.


Plus i want to see how fast i can get my car with just boltons, slicks,spary, tranny and 12 bolt. Thanks Calvin

well if you already pulled the timing cover, whats stopping you from pulling the cam?

I was wondering if you have to take the intake off to take the cam out.? Because of the gear in the back of the cam.

Yes you do because you have to remove the lifters. You pull the cam out and all the lifters will fall down into the bores and you are up **** creek.

You could try using those retractable magnets to hold the lifters up but you are going out on a limb with that one. Not sure how well that would work.

Would it be possible to extract the bolts from the cam with only removing the timing chain and not the whole cam?

I would have to think something else was wrong for the cam bolts to break, just spinning an engine faster shouldn't break the bolts. You would have to be spinning fast enough to break other parts like the rods before cam bolts would fail.

Something to the effect that either the bolts were loose and they sheared or maybe over tightened to the point they failed.

Mine did this after I replaced the harmonic damper.......the one I used was bad and the engine lasted 3 weeks

Just like thebufenator said. This just started to happen after i put underdrive pulleys.

If you bought a one of the piggyback pulleys for the crank, you have to put the damper back on the underdrive. If you are driving around without it, then you are beating the bearings out of the motor.

hope i caught it it time, the pulleys didnt do much for me so iam just going to put the stock one back on.

just pull the cam and intake off to inspect everything in its path. I don't know why you wouldn't spend an extra $200 to put a slightly better cam in the car. However, if the bolts did break as the others stated in this thread something else may have caused it...I spin my Lt1 to 7000 RPM and no problems like that ever.

I pulled the intake off last night and the pushrods are all straight and it looks good so far.
