Default Okay, how are folks getting down to <2800 car weight?

W/O driver, the website Camaro was 3090 with 1/2 tank a gas at Memphis with both bottles out. Weight reduction is:

-ps reservoir
-full exhaust, have short duals with bullets
-gutted stock carpet
-one race seat
-hvac gone, all stuff in dash
-front and rear bumper supports
-bogarts, but i have dot sportsmans up front
-horn is gone
-airbags are gone
-back seats are gone
-rear carpeting is gone
-radio, heater controls gone
-ac is gone

Weight added:
-9 "
-6 pt moly roll bar

So I'm 3300 raceweight right now. How much weight drop if I did BMR or UMI k-member, a arms, front drag brakes, and ds2 moroso fronts, remove abs block?

john john john I could have that baby down to 28 hundred easy. you got alot to go..

door bars,
trim metal behind fenders
remove backing supports for bumper mounts about 5lbs each
wolfe door panels
aero space light weight brks
rewire car for standalone gauges. you would be surprised at the added weight for all the wires.
k member
upper and lower arms
percys speed glass ( serious weight reduction )
if its a drag only headlight motors & lights
remove seat belt brackets and seat mounts
emergency brk and cables
wiper motor and wipers
trim out metal behind rear speaker and side panels. put plastic back over to cover it up you can never tell.

I could go on and on

You can do all the stuff that 1fsta mentioned. You can also pull your carpet and seats and remove all the extra brackets for the rear seats, the rear belts, just all the miscellaneous tabs and brackets you can find. Cut out excess door material behind your door panel. Remove all the heat shields from underneath the car.

When my Camaro was together it was 2830 without driver including the 10 point cage. Now I have Aerospace brakes waiting to go on along with alot of other crap I cutout. I can still do a VFN hatch and maybe even lexan.

Few thigns you could do John that would get ya there, LW ozite carpet, I did that in my car and a total of 5 lbs of carpet is now in the car, about 20 less then the factory carpet without the backing. Glue it down as you go and it will look good. Cutting all the excess metal brackets out is about 10 lbs, door bars and the brackets for them are about 10, do the whole brake system over, put strange brakes front and rear and redo all the lines, so the abs block and all associated wiring can be removed that all together is about 85 lbs with the front and rear brakes because the e brake has to go with the rear braks swap , plus the lines will be lighter (run a single line to the back and T it off) plus an aje k member and a arms will also drop another 50 lbs off as well. A big single fan on the radiator will drop 10 lbs from the stock fans, and a manual rack will pull another 10 lbs, and drive better then a looped stock one. The ds2 tires will save you about 10 lbs a piece over sportsman fronts, so that's another 20 lbs. If you rewire for just the guages you need and pull the stock cluster and put a plate there with said guages, I bet that's another 20 lbs of junk. That's 235 lbs, and you haven't done any speed glass or changed any interior panels, so it will still look like a car. That should get the car to about 2855, granted that's not 2800 even, but if that is the # you're really after, you could cut the t top area out and weld a sheet metal plate in it's place way up high, put on the speedglass front and rear, put on a pin on hatch and pin on hood, that would probably pull another 100 lbs off, but it will hack the car up and make going to the track a serious pita alone, you will need a 2nd person with you because of the hood and whatnot. But, that would get the car under 2800 if you really want to go that far with it. If it runa 11.0's on motor now, going from 3090 to the potentially 2750ish would probably put it at 10.8, probably 10.6

My car is 2975 with a half tank of gas, 3150 with me in it. (This is on Rt 66's scales, so you know it's accurate)

Things I have removed/replaced wth lighter components:

-ps system
-front and rear bumper supports
-back seats
-radio and all of the speakers & amp
-spare tire & jack
-front sway bar
-ac is gone
-stock battery tray & coolant tank
-Glasstek pin-on hood
-magnaflow mufflers dumped off of the collectors
-ozite lightweight
-two race seats
-convo pros all around with bias ply front & back

Things I still have to do/remove:

-abs
-airbags
-heat and rest of the hvac
-door bars
-wiper motors and blades
-k-member & a-arms
-drag brakes
-lightweight battery
-lexan glass
-pin on hatch

I'm looking to get a sub 3000 raceweight for next year after I add my roll bar.

I went with an Oddysee 680 battery mounted up front. I HAD a 32lb battery and switch in the rear. I removed the battery 32lbs, switch and arm 4lbs, neg cable 1lb, positive cable 7lbs, and steel bracket 2lbs. Replaced with the tiny 680 battery 15lbs, and a tiny hunk of bent aluminum to hold it down maybe 3 ounces if that. Total savings was 29lbs for a whopping $119.00, not to mention when putting a battery in the back of our cars they need to be vented in one of those NHRA legal boxes.

JL ws-6 had a good one with the single fan. Get a donor fan out of a V-6 car, they will slip right in and save 10lbs.

My Stock Eliminator LT1 F-Bodies weigh just about 2800 lbs without driver and ballast. They still have both stock front seats, all interior panels including headliner and carpet, factory Ram Air hood, stock K-member and A-arms, stock glass, and the factory impact stuff under the bumpers. They also feature chrome moly roll bar or cage and a 12-bolt rear. A lot of the weight savings come from cutting rotating weight. I also take each car down to the bare shell and only put back what the rules require. Every ounce adds up.

Good Luck,

Daren

That's one way to do it. I was thinking a couple little 10 inch fans like the flexalite ones I see in summit catalogs, and just attach them right to the radiator, and you could even use the stock wiring. Sure they'll move less air but on a race car it's probably not an issue.

While I'm thinking of it a smaller radiator, something that was made to fit inside the lower support and upper support, would probably pull another 20 lbs off I bet. Little less coolant, and it would be farther away from the motor too, making more room to work on stuff. Also stand it up some, so if the grill is holllow, or the fog light holes are empty, they will supply air to the radiator.

I talk to him all the time, I just wanted to chat a bit about it. I see his car once in a while, and I saw him do some of the later stage weight reduction.

rip the 70 lbs of exhaust off the car, that mufflex system has got to weigh at least that.
