Default Anybody ever had a tranny blanket fail?

Hi guys,

I'm actually asking this question on both Ford and Chevy sites. Recently I had to have my tranny rebuilt. Bigger input shaft, syncros, yada, yada, yada. But unfortunately there is no SFI bellhousing that is made for my tranny. So I've been using an RCI blanket. Its currently expired so I'm buying a new one. I took my old one and cut it in two and placed one section under the carpet along the tunnel near my feet as added precaution. But it got me thinking if anyone has had or heard of debris coming through the blanket?

I don't think my tranny will break but launching at 6500+ and shifting at 7k, its in the back of my mind. Thanks. -Mark

if you are really concerned weld some 1/4 plate along the tunnel area above the bellhousing. if shrapnel makes it through that, then god is out to get you.

Very true. That's a good idea though. How would I get the plate to contour to the shape of the tunnel? Would it be easier or better to cut out a section in the tunnel and replace it with 1/4 plating? Thanks. -Mark

Mark,

You would hope for it to contain it all, but read Taner's thread in the results section on "breakage" and it makes you think again! I know I'll be glad to have my CSR sheild on my TH400 when she goes back together.

don't cut anything out.

Measure how long a plate you will need with a tape measure weld a portion on the driverside of the tunnel then get a torch and BFH and start to shape the plate over the tunnel welding as you go.

I think the rules mandate flexplate shields must be .25 and transmission shield must be .21, rules may have changed, I would just make one to fit your trans yourself you can find photos of them all over to give you ideas, then just make it out of 1/4" plate and call it good.

Welding it to the trans tunnel would do the job, but would be a real bitch to ever remove.

I would still check the sfi rules on mounting.

.

Blankets are legal for manual trans, I had one on my fast car, before I slowed it down & went glide. All the other guys I race with have one also.
Building a 1/4" plate body shield is an excellent idea. I would find a bellhousing, didn't someone on here just cut up his foot or ankle last week?? Good luck.

That I belive that was Taner. I spoke to Quicktime yesterday. They are expected to start working on designing a bell housing for my tranny first part of next year. So I offered them a spare bell housing that I have in which they said it would speed up the process if they had that. So I guess I'll just subdue with the tranny blanket now and hopefully by summer I'll have an SFI bellhousing installed. But for now I have half of a blanket under the carpet and the other half will be underneath the new blanket that I just bought. So I guess a double wrap would be better than the one. Thanks guys.

I guy at the local track had a dragster that had a legal SFI shield on it. Well the trans broke and sent shrapnel flying. Some shrapnel went thru the shield. A track official got hit by some of it and messed his arm up pretty bad.

I would assume if that could happen that a blanket could defintley fail.

The shrapnel went thru the guys are and up it and out of his shoulder. Luckily he recovered without any major problems.

the custom blanket i had did it's job the best that it could. it was a blanket constructed of 5 layers of kevlar i believe. not much more it could do! unfortunately it is like a condom....one time use only, lol!!! you toss it after it gets used.

Also even though it is not required till you run faster, enclosing the drive shaft around the front u-joint is a good idea as well.
