sts camaro lost # 7 last night (stock block)
first of all my setup is on a bone stock ls1 engine, however i did upgrade it to the ls6 pcv system. i was running non-intercooled 7 psi on a t60 rear mount turbo.. it made 380whp, 440tq.. it was suppost to be a tune on the safe side.. i have 42 # injectors that were only at like 70% or so..
anyways i saw a guy from work with a turbod r32 as i was turning onto the freeway.. so we went for a good race.. i slammed the gas going 80.. i think the problem was i had 4 people besides me in my car : ( once 3rd gear redlined (a4) i think thats when it blew..
i was able to limp it home.. it blew out the dipstick n threw oil everywhere.. n it was idleing like crap. i did a compression test the next morning on a few cylinders... number 7 was 0.00. it lasted bout 3 months boosted : ?
i thought under 400 whp wasnt enough to really destroy the engine... i think having soo many people in the car is what really did it.. ill update when i pull it all apart... anyone pulled an fbody engine from the top before??
UPDATE 12/5/07
so the heads looks ok... even the block seems ok from what i can tell so far.. of couse ill know more when i pull the bottom half out... but heres a view of the number 7 cylinder

exact same thing happened to me in the exact same situation, except i was racing FOUR srt 4 neons, but hey at least i won lol and i only had 2 pple in the car. It startedt smoking at the top of 3rd gear when i let off and the idle was going nuts when i stopped. Then it started to make a nice knocking sound from the chunk of piston i melted off #7 due to the compression being off (oh and also cracked that sleeve and in turn hair lined cracked the dam block) Annnnnyways yeah its much easier to get it all down with k member and everything. It all comes down so sweet you wont realize how easy/less of a headache it is until you bring the motor down from the bottom, they have a step by step of how to do it from under with k member and everything in the LS1/LS6 high performance book from WIll Handzel CARTECH. Well Good luck and sorry to hear that. Welcome to the "i killed piston #7 club" :::::HIGH FIVE:::::

7 is usually the first to check out. I don't really like to get on it with even two people in the car. The whole dynamics of the tune is altered by adding so much weight. I would never get on my car with three or more people in the car it's hard on everything.

Bob is exactly right. You cant safely run 7psi w/o a way to cool the charge air. Your IAT's were way out of the safety range, especially on a highway run. It doesnt matter what kind of forced induction you run, 7psi, highway run, and high IAT's will hurt the motor.

i lifted the front end of my car almost 6 feet in the air. I am 6'4" tall and yeah it was a pretty interesting way to do things just because i took out the whole deal and rolled it out from under the car on a dolly. Im pretty sure if you didnt have the heads and intake installed it would be MUCHHHHH easier since you wont have to lift the car so high up in the air. Hope this helps...

I've taken my motor out from the top 3 times. Twice with the Tranny still attached and once even with the Front crank pulley. Definitely takes a couple of people and some prying/wiggling.

Sorry to hear about that. I have a setup just like yours with no intercooler but i have the stock fuel system. No problems for 2 years now but probably pushing my luck. In the spring gonna do fuel and get an intercooler from trt.

I popped #7 top of 3rd gear right at the 1000 foot mark. I was making 436 hp and 432 tq on an a4 with an agressive tune and no intercooler, 6 psi. High iat and high coolant temps got me i'm pretty sure. Combined with plugs that were too hot. My car still runs pretty well though, passed leak down and compression tests. Might have just collapsed a lifter or something. I don't really want to find out its something worse when i pull the head off though so I'm building a forged 370 for it now.

Did you have anything to log data? Do you have any idea of what the IAT's were? If you don't have anything to keep track of the car (logging), you may want to invest in that too, since your about to spend some cheddar on a new engine!
Good luck with the rebuild!

You were racing and wrapping out third gear with five people in a 4-seater?
Like stated, an intercooler would've been a wise addition to that combo. IATs couldn't have been very safe with that much boost/load
As for pulling the motor, I've done it from the bottom once in my garage using the engine hoist to lift the front of the car by the upper radiator/core support. I'll be doing it that way again this winter to put in the 347/D1SC and tubular K-member

i wanna hurry up and get it out so i can see what damage has been done... i wonder if anyones busted the ringland but not damaged the cylinder walls, or the heads..
im hopeing to just hone out the cylinders... new pistons n rings.. and since im there stronger pushrods n valve springs.. i havnt decided yet if a new cam is worth it..

i also took my motor out from the top but had to strip it down and pull the heads off. dropping it out from under the car is the fastest way. i also lost #7 but i was pushing 15 pounds of boost at the time! good luck!
