I recently purchased a set of 317 heads from a forum member to use on my single turbo build over the winter. They're in pretty good shape and I had planned on using the PRC spring kit from TSP that comes with the good springs, with Ti retainers, etc. and running them basically stock.
A buddy of mine that attended SAM in Houston is going to clean them up for me, not real heavy porting, just get some crap off the chambers, knock off the rough edges, etc. He mentioned running different valves in these heads. Would you guys recommend swapping them in favor of a stainless valve? He suggested Ferrea, but the more we talked he said a lot of racers use a stouter exhaust valve due to higher heat from higher combustion temps. What do you guys suggest and what size are the stock 6.0 valves? 2.00/1.55's?

im running cleaned up 317 heads as well.stock sized Manley valves which are 2.00/1.55

I'm running stainless steel manley valves that are ceramic coated, but just a stainless valve is better than stock.

on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being needed, 1 being not needed. where would you rate getting upgraded valves on a turbo application?

Yeah that's what I was getting at as well, is it necessary to upgrade? Say I'm shooting for 14 lbs of boost and 600 rwhp?

I would rate it a ten just for longevity and also really good springs like upgrading to the patriot extreme spring. I would at least go with a stainless steel valve and I only paid 120 bucks to have the faces all ceramic coated for added heat protection.

i am going to run stock 317's just to get my car running. but i did put in SS intake valves and Inconel exh. valves.

Inconel... that sounds familiar. I think that's what my buddy mentioned, but I had no idea what he's talking about. PM me a link to those if you found them online somewhere. Thanks

600rwhp through a Th400 is healthy but not out of the range of proven. As long as your EGTs are in line, stock valves should be fine. If you want some extra assurance, get some inconel valves but I think you'll be fine.

I was googling inconel valves and the cheapest I found were like $35/ea! That's crazy. Would it be crazy talk to have the surfaces of the stockers ceramic coated for a little added insurance? I know someone above mentioned doing that. Or would that be useless with the stockers? I'm thinking either that or just buy a set of manley or ferrea stainless and call it good for now. Like I said, this won't be crazy stupid power, just enough to be a solid 10 second streeter.
