!WTF! Dakota beats my 4.8!!!!
I have a 2000 rc 4x4 with a 4.8, it has the k&n setup an just installed cherrybomb extreme muffler (sounds nice!) the truck runs strong, but not strong enough to beat a pesky 2002 quad cab dakota with a stick!
Just wanna know what i can do to my 4.8 that'll blow his doors off!! (oh yeah and the dodge is a 4.7.)

The longtube headers will save a bunch of weight as well as giving 20 or so more hp. That is a better purchase than NO2. Especially if you still have stock exhaust manifolds.
New converter is a good idea. So is a shift kit.
More gear never hurts either.

I had a 3000 stall in my 5.3 Silverado and it was fine for towing, as long as the weight wasnt ridiculous and you controlled the pedal some. You definitely cant drive it with a heavy foot doing stop and go or the trans temps will shoot up. And it did wonders for the off the line acceleration.

You'd be better off getting some Stage 1 5.3 heads. That would maintain your compression better than the LS1/6 heads. Heads and a cam are always a great idea; but you will need longtube headers first to get all you can from the heads/cam.

the 4.8 is just not enough for a full size 4x4 especially with 150k on the clock. save you're pennies and get a 6.0 out of a wrecked truck or van. you can find them for dirt cheap and it's a VERY simple process to swap.

NOS is up to your personal preference, but there is a lot of good advice already in this thread. With 150k on your 4.8L, there are some inexpensive 5.3 and 6.0 takeouts available that should literally drop right in and make a huge difference in available torque. Add headers and a few bolt-ons, plus a tune, and you could easily be 70+ rwhp ahead of the game. Then decide if you need the performance enhancement a stall converter offers. If you don't tow, or tow light - then go for it!
If all that isn't enough, Stage 1.5 5.3 heads would be the best upgrade for a 5.3, while LS6 heads on a 6.0 would work well. Both with mild cams like a 220R (224R for 6.0) should make that dakota run and hide!

I agree with the swap reccomendation. If it were mine, and I had the urge to max the potential, I would first yank the 4.8 and put in a 5.3. They are EXTREMELY cheap for what you are getting, and I just passed one for sale the other day (longblock) for 1000 bucks. You can then add the converter and stall while you are there, add the headers as well, and you could get it done, all in one place (besides a tune).
If I had the 5.3 I would:
add a Cheatr Cam from TR.
Hardened pushrods and Springs.
LS6 intake
underdrive pulley
find a used set of ported 5.3 heads...
and at the same time, swap your timing chain for a stronger one, and then maybe port your oil pump, or buy another off the boards. Cheap insurance.
Longtube headers, ORY and merging into the Exhaust you already have. Add a cut out and then have your Truck Tuned for all of the new goodies.. I would say this could be done for about 4000 dollars, and it would be a FAST truck. VERY FAST.
