Default Good way to check valve geometry with a stock rocker

When preparing to do a head install this can actual make the process very quick and painless once the heads are on the car. The head I started with was a ETP 215 cc 11 deg head. First thing is to remove the intake and exhaust valve spring on one cylinder. Then install a set of checker springs on the intake and exhaust valves. Then take a Sharpe "black marker" and color the tip of the valve black. Now take the rocker stand and install it on the cylinder head and then bolt on the 2 rockers. Now with the rocker bolted down and the valve in the rest position wiggle the rocker side to side. It will remove the marker on the tip of the valve a little. Now stroke the valve with the checker springs. It should be easy and wiggle it side to side a little you will wear the marker off the valve tip and develop a pattern. Now remove the rockers and check your pattern. Proper pattern should be even to the top and bottom of the valve. Normally start about 2 mm from the top of the valve and end the same from the bottom. If you are to close to the top edge of the valve tip with the pattern. You will want to move the pattern down to center the pattern on the valve tip. To move the pattern down you will need to add shim under the stand. I would add shim in .020 increment and re conduct test till proper pattern is achieved. Once the pattern is good now you can move on to checking your piston to valve and lifter pre load measurements. We ended up with a .080 shim and a 8.200 push rod for the setup we did.

If this helps anyone good luck with your setup.

George
