Default Input & opinions on fabricated Chevelle crossmember:

Trans. cross member home fabrication of 1/2" x 2" steel for '67 Chevelle convertible. Will be holding up a 4L80E transmission. Old cross member & perches will not work, so I fabricated it myself.

Wow, nicer than anything I coulda made. Looks really strong. How much does it weigh? I really like that you made it so that you could un-bolt it.

John that looks good. Do you have a brake or did you bend those by hand with a torch? nice fab work

I was able to modify my factory cross member and use the stock turbo 350 trans mount. I dropped my cross memeber 3/4 inch and offset it back an inch. then slide it back to the aft holes in the frame rails and drill 2 new holes in frame rails to bolt the cross member.

Looks like what you built will do a good job.

If anyone would like to see how I adapted the Competition Engineering universal crossmember to my project go here:

http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/jour...age=5&reverse=

Start at entry 22 and go to the next entries on page 9, 8 etc. I think mine came out clean and functional. At less than $50 to start with, I found that piece is a reasonable investment.

I think a the same design made of 1" X 2" .090 wall rect. tubing would be stronger, lighter and bend less.

the old one is11.76 lbs........the new one is19.08 lbs with new perches,16.29-crossmember,2.79-perches... i used a hydrolic ram with what i think is a brake ( a "v "shaped piece of steel with another that rams down into it ,held together with some tension springs)it was on a job i was on and it worked well. the reason i used the flat stock is it goes under the trans and i didnt have too much room to play with . once i bolt it to the chassis ill test it for flex, if i stand on it it doesnt move ,210 lbsthanks JOHN
