It's called "dieseling." IIRC, it's caused by a bad injector(s) allowing fuel to continue to flow into the engine. The fuel is then ignited (as in a diesel engine) by the compression from the pistons + latent heat in the combustion chamber.

yep dieseling, you could also have alot of carbon buildup on the top of your pistons that could be igniting as well. Find out which injector is leaking an run some seafoam thru your engine.

so is it a bad injector or carbon buildup? Which one? or both? n should i replace the injectors?

also how do i figure out what injectors are leaking?

is it hurting the engine by doing this?

you could remove them an take them in to get cleaned and inspected--around here we have a place called Doctor Injector that specializes in just that. It's definitely not something that is good for the engine, as it could be igniting before the piston reaches TDC an thats bad--i would just go ahead an do both, the seafoam isn't expensive an its good preventive maint. for your car anyway. This is just a suggestion-someone else might chime in here with another idea.

Every 3rd or so tank, I have used STP INJECTOR CLEANER..1 bottle per tank...about a buck each..never had any problems. TRY SOME. PUT 2 IN..WILL NOT HURT IT IN ANY WAY.

could be running to hot of a spark plug! or could be timing, but i think these cars have factory fixed timing. yea try the seafoam!

I have had this happen before and it was timing . But this was back in the old days before fuel injectors and crank sensors. I think you will have to look a both timing and injectors . What was said about the injectors made a lot of sense.
