Default car runs too cold

I just bought a 98 SS and am finding the car never gets warm. On the highway its normally below the 160, in city driving sometimes it almost makes it to the 1/4 mark, but even at idle it never gets past that. I thought this might be the thermostat so I just replaced it with a 186*, no noticeable difference. If I turn on the heater the car does blow hot air...

Car has a Vortech SC, so the hood scoop is dumping cold air into the engine bay, but the car should at least be heating up till the t stat opens right? I also thought maybe the fans were programed to come on earlier but that still doesn't explain why it can't get up to the t stat temp.

Any ideas?

I'm not really sure honestly. Personally I think <160 is too cold to be mashing the pedal, id rather it be around 180, but besides that, with a 186* stat in how the hell is the car still running that cold?

I have a 98 with a 160 tstat and mine never goes above the 1/4 mark unless im sitting in traffic for a long time. Then I kick on the manual fan switch and it drops down rapidly. Check to see if/when your fans are coming on.

I'll be going to a shop soon to have some EGR codes deleted, I'll have them check the fans as well.

Possible the engine is seeing so much air through the scoop it can't even heat up to the t stat temp?

The Supercharger is going to be putting off a ton of heat. And I highly doubt THAT much air comes through the scoop. Well, enough to cool the motor to temperatures that low.

I agree, but what else could cause this

Shouldn't matter whats going on around the engine (fans, hood scoop, etc) it should get to the tstat temp atleast, right?

I wouldn't trust that the guage is neccessarily accurate. Have a Tech II or other scanner read the actual temp comming off your coolant temp sensor. Betcha a dollar it's within 2-3 degrees of your thermostat.

i have a 98, it sits at the 1/4 mark pretty much all the time. your thermostat is possibly stuck open. try replacing it. its cheap and easy.

My 98 3800 V6 only warms up to about the 1/4 mark, however being the V6 it may just operate at a lower temperature. I don't know if I've ever heard the fans come on. Maybe they are quieter than the fan on my old taurus, I don't know. I've only had the car since september and the past few months have been cold enough the fan probably never needs to kick on anyway.
