Is it possible to replace rack-pinion seal?
2000 Z28- My rack and pinion has had a slow fluid leak out the drivers side thats looking worse. I am assuming that the seal is bad. Is it possible to replace just this seal? The rest of it works fine, so I hate to spend all of that money to replace the whole thing over a $10 seal. I have to top off the pump with fluid about once a month when it starts to make a little noise, but I hate crawling underneith there and seeing that leak. Plus I cannot take it to the track this summer with the leak there.

If you don't mind some shade-tree effort you may be
able to get some more life out of the unit. I once did
a Pinto rack (on an actual Pinto) that had a lot of
play and weep. The ends had a keeper ring and seal
that were just worn. They appeared non-servicable
but the keeper was really threaded and staked; took
out the stake pin (once I found it), crunk it back
down tight and restaked it with a piece of copper
house wire. All better, buddy drove it for years after
with no trouble.
Maybe they've gotten more sophisticated about
preventing owner service but worth an inspection.
