Default 8.5 to 7.5 swap?

This may be a stupid question but will the stock 3-series out of a 2000 camaro with 3.42 ring and pinion fit into an older 8.5" 10-bolt?

The reason im asking is i have an early 80's chevy truck with the 8.5 10-bolt that needs gears and a posi. I also have the the carrier, ring and pinion from my 2000 camaro sitting on my shop floor and was wondering if that could be swapped over to the 8.5 housing in my truck.

Nope.....ring gears are different sizes (8.5" vs 7.5", hence the name), so the carriers that hold those ring gears will not interchange.

no i have the carrier and everything to swap over. basically what im asking is can a 7.5 ring gear, the 3-series carrier, and pinion bolt into an empty 8.5 10-bolt housing and work right?

No.
8.5" 10 bolts are everywhere and dirt cheap, go find one and grab the parts you need.

Just about anywhere! GM put the 8.5" 10 bolt in millions of cars and trucks. Your local salvage yard will have tons to choose from if you want used stuff, any speed shop like Summit & Jegs carry new stuff.
