Cam for Pump Gas with 59cc heads?
The best gas available to us is 92 octane. With a stock lower end on an 02 LS1 from a WS6, we plan on adding Patriot Stage II LS6 style heads with 59CC chambers. What would be a good CAM to still allow us to use pump gas, get a reasonably smooth idle, and wake this guy up? I believe we are looking in the 224 range. Not looking for ultimate HP, and want nice low end on the car. Used 59cc heads are probably not the best choice for our goals, but the price is good...

I got that cam (224/224 .581/.581 112) and those heads with lt's and I made over 400rwhp. My cr is over 11.1 or maybe a little more. I still run on 92 octane fuel as well and it runs great! I haven't had one problem with it.

That is a relief to hear! Price was right, and hadn't noted the 59cc part until I already committed. Don't want to go crazy, 380-400 rwhp is all we are looking for! The car (67 Camaro) has the T56 and we are waiting on the 3.73 posi rear. We just bought some 15x7 rallyes with 245/60R15 BFG's on the back and 225/60R15's on the front for playing around (about as big as you get in a stock wheelhouse). It is just a toy car, not a race car!

Yeah I got mine running through the t-56, ls7 clutch kit and moser 12 bolt w/ true trac and 3.37s. I have the F1 All Season 275/40/17's on front and 275/40/17 mt et streets on the rear. It's my toy too!

with a 57 cc chamber and stock bottom end and gaskets i had around 11:7 or so scr so you should be around 11:5 or so. i ran a 228r on a 112+2 and i was on the high end because dcr was right at 9.0 so that same type cam would be pretty good for your setup also, that 224 might have to much dcr and knock some without a fuel additive or timing pulled some.

true...but the 224 is a great cam. I'm actually thinking of either the tsp 233/239 or the tsp torquer 2. I wanted the torquer 3 but that's way to much lift for 59cc heads.

Whose cam are you using?
Do remember that this is a 6 speed car with 3.73 rear and MONO-LEAF suspension on 245 wide tires...

I think the 224 should be about right for what it sounds like you're going for.

Okay, the SI2 is what you are using. What springs are you using? The heads don't come with the PP springs, but a set of springs from the 317 heads...
Will those springs work out with the 581 lift? What about the springs on our current heads? Gunnar will rebuild the heads with new gold springs, seals, and inspect for cracks, flatness for about $300, should we just send them in to him and get that out of the way for piece of mind?
It also looks like if we used the GM MLS gaskets with a compressed height of 58 mils that would CR help a tad. Did you use stock length pushrods and stock lifters? Sotck rockers?

I'd go with a Futral F13 on a 114+4. It's a 230/232 cam that acts very similar to the 224 cams because of it's lobe design. Not only that, but it's softer on the springs than say a TR 224 or Comp XE-R 224 would be (which is TSP or SI's 224 cams). Specs of F13 are 230/232 .595"/.585" 114+4 (Adv 281/283). Regular Patriot Golds will work fantastic with the cam.
Go with a 114 LSA to help reduce some of the dynamic compression (could even retard to a +2 to help as well). Also, go with a .045" Cometic gasket - since your compression will be up, might as well tighten up the quench to reduce detonation. You'll be around 11.6:1 CR with a DCR of 8.8:1 (with 114+4). With 93 octane and a good tune/good cooling capabilities, you'll be pretty safe and will make a TON of torque.

I'm not sure of the cc's on my TEA 5.3 Stage II heads (just a .010 cleanup cut on the surface), but I get by on 93 just fine with a Speed Inc. 224 . I pull hard through the quarter and MPH at 116 - 117. Just roasted the stock 245 RSA tires - so no hole shot, best ET is 12.51. 3650 lbs @ 117mph = easily over 400 at the wheels

Thanks for all the replies. I am seriously considering going a hair bigger and buying the 228R (228/228 .588/.588) on a 112 or 114 LSA (part of what I am trying to decide, want a smooth idle). If we bought the cam with springs (918's) and pushrods ($589.99), an LS6 oil pump ($93.99), LS2 Timing Set ($37.99) and the GM Head and Cam bolt and gasket set with the MLS gaskets ($149.99), we would be looking at $871.96 total. With the used heads (59cc Stage II), we are under $1500, can do the labor ourselves, and should easily exceed 400rwhp on pump gas. The only thing I haven't factored is the cost of having it tuned, but that was a sunk cost anyway as we were going to have it tuned regardless. Recall again that this is in a 67 Camaro with MONO LEAF rear (traction bars, 3.73 posi 8.5" 10 bolt) and a T56 trans (just showed up today from its visit to Six Speeds Inc).
This boils down to will we be safe with 114LSA, or should we go 112? What do you think about this cam package? It is silly to open the timing cover and not change the oil-pump and timing chain, so those are happening no matter what. Last, any great tuners in the Twin Cities (MN) area?
