WOT lockup question
Wahtsup everyone. I've heard a lot of talk about locking converters at WOT. What exactly does this mean? If I'm at the track with my vig3200 doesn't it lock up at some point down the strip? The only reason i ask is because i know locking up a converter with a single clutch converter at WOT can damage it especially on the spray.

Good question, WOT - Wide Open Throttle. Just what it sounds like, the clutch in the converter gets applied, typically in 3rd gear, when you are wide open throttle. This is only done if your programmer tells it to. From the factory the PCM tells the converter clutch to turn off when the car is WOT. A low HP car might be able to handle a WOT lock up with a single disk, but would probably eventually burn the clutch up. The single disks are not designed for this, you have to have a lot of extra clutch capacity to handle the WOT lock up.

I would not recommend locking any single disk converter at WOT. I have heard and seen plenty of them fail from doing so. When people talk about locking up the converter going down the track, they are talking about the torque converter clutch. This usually done with a manual switch wired into the lock up wiring circuit. The idea is make the crankshaft and the input shaft turn one to one without any slippage from the converter. Some will do this once in 3rd gear as doing it before hand, such as in second is very hard on a transmission. Others will just use it to buy a few hundred rpm when getting to the end of the track to keep from running out of rpm and having to shift to 4th. This helps in some cases so that a gear change or a tire height change does not need to be done as well. Hope this helps you understand. Vince

is it actually beneficial if i am running say from a dig to 160 mph... my car shifts at 6000 rpm but at 125ish in 3rd. i used to be in the 135 area with my stock stall. would it help to get the extra gearing out of your car when racing to those speeds? i think it would but i have no evidence to back it up.
