Default timing chain + gear

so I have a 98 Z28 and want to know if the timing chain or timing gear breaks, will the piston go up and hit the lowered valve? Also, I heard that some engines come with a plastic timing gear, do the ls1's? Thanks for your time!

yea you will have valve slap if that breaks cause your timing will go out and your cam will just go ever which way and bend valves
