Default Gap between Flexplate and troque converter - normal?

Hi,

I just put my engine in my car.
I put the torque converter on the pump and installed the engine after that.
Now the is a gap between the flexplate and the torque converter.
Is this normal?
Will it come together, when I screw it together?
The gap is almost as thick as the flexplate, see pic.

Thanks for help

James

It'd put some washers in there so the torque converter comes out of the trans about 1/8 to 3/16
Might shine a light up and see if the converter pilot is into the crank at least 1/8"

Did you try to pull the converter forward to meet the flexplate ? The hub on the converter (center) MUST slip into the crankshaft to center the unit. You may have to wiggle the converter around while turning it but it should slip forward pretty easily and be flush up to the flexplate.

yOU DON'T WANT TO PULL IT TOO FAR OUT OF THE PUMP EITHER.

Push it all the way into the trans, it should move forward a max of 3/16" if it doesn't hit the flexplate by then add spacers.

Push the converter all the way into the pump. Measure the gap, should be 3/16". If more, subtract, 3/16" from total gap,
that is the exact amount of washers to use. Install bolt's & washer's, if needed & push forward to flexplate & tighten as usual.
All my converters are set to 3/16". Good luck.

If it's all stock parts he shouldn't need any washers or spacers. Aftermarket converter, yes. But I have never had to space a stock GM converter.

Yep, space is space. And stock parts don't need spacers or washers. They were NEVER manufactured that way.
If he had a motor plate he would need spacers.

As I said, measure & if needed, use washers. You never assume anything.
If you are pulled out of the pump or pressed into the pump too much. BAD things can happen.
Take a minute & do a quick check.

Id make sure its perfect before you drive it. My last car had a bolt come loose before I bought it and it trashed the bell housing and the converter.

This car I went to unbolt the stall and the bolts are loose.........

Kind of a critical thing.......

Yea they were never manufactured that way, but almost any th350 converter is near 30 years old, lot of time for several cut and clean/rebuilds which change the tolerances.

They also were never manufactured with that style tab with a nut welded to it. Some works been done to that converter.

Default measuring the torque converter ?

if you measure from the rear of the engine block to the point where the torque convert bolts to what should you have ?

If you measure with the torque converter in the transmission right lay a flat edge on the bell housing and to where the torque converter bolts to the flexplate what should this measurement be ?>
