Default Thinking of upgrading from 228 to G5x3

I have the urge to go bigger as I'm gettin some upgrades in my drivetrain and drive this car 3-4 days rather than 7 days of the week . I love the street manners of my 228/228 113 lsa, but was doing some searching on the afr heads mated with the g5x3 and it looks like a stout performer. My first question for u guys is how will the driveability change with the addition of my new 9inch and 3.90 gears? I had a stock ten bolt with 3.42 gears. I have a great tuner here in the bay area so I know he'll do a spot on tune. Keep in mind I had dd a first gen that was stroked and stalled with a monster cam. So I can deal with a lot more than the average joe. My second question would be the most important, performance. My afr 205s are untouched out the box as well as the fast 90. The 228 dynoed at 454rwhp and 412rwtq. Will I lose a lot of under the curve power and do u guys think its worth the extra peak numbers? I'm definately not set on the g5x3 as the only larger cam upgrade, so I am open to feedback for other larger cams. Thanks

Cris

Bigger cams are not always better or quicker. Dont just look at the top end dyno numbers, look at under the curve potential.

Bigger cams may not have as quick as throttle response or be as quick off the line.

your making alot of power with your setup man. you will definitley lose some under the curve going from the 228/228 to the X3.

I know I'm going to lose some power down low, but I am adding some 3.89 gears which will help get through the rpm band and this isn't my daily anymore. My question is for the g5x3 users how they like they drivability and if it feels like a total dog down low.

I have the X3 in my T/A, with a 3600 stall and 3.23 gears and to me it isn't a dog at all down low. As far as drivibilty, it's not my DD, but I have no complaints when I get it out on the weekends. No bucking, surging, love sitting at a stop and feeling the car shaking under my seat, and hearing the nice exhaust note from the rear.

my dad went from his 224/224 cam only setup to a 5.3 PRC /MS3 setup and gained about 70rwhp...

worth it if you put heads on..

You're already making good power. I would imagine that you'll miss the low end of the 228 vs the G5X3. I have the G5X2 and will probably be replacing it with AFR's 224/228 cam for better low end.

Is your FAST90 ported? If not, that might be the better route to go since you'll gain HP across the curve and not just top end. How about a small shot of N20?

My fast 90 isn't ported and neither are the afr 205s. I've thought about n2o, but I like the idea of a nasty na 10 second car that I have no problem taking out to the local meets and occasionaly to work and back.

I too am running this exact set up.. YOU CANNOT beat the sound, idle, and overall perf. of the G5X3 imo... ( fig. speaking)..

Power all through the powerband. Driveability is fine. Proper tuning is the key!

GL... keep us posted.

I had 4.11s with my G5x3. IMO it is a badass cam and with the proper tuning can be easy to live with.

Had the g5x3 version I, and loved. Louis at LGM put version II in and I like it even more. My combo made 360 rwtq at 2800 rpms. Not bad low end power.

I should mention this though. With the g5x3 vI cam I only had the 78 mm FAST and she put down 457 rwhp 417 rwtq. Once g5x3 vII and a ported 90mm FAST and tb were added she made 490 rwhp 445 rwtq. So how much was the cam responsible for and how much was the ported intake responsible for?? If I had to guess I'd say about 1/2 and 1/2. So to apply that hypothesis g5x3 vII with the 78 fast should've made 475/431, and g5x3 version I with the ported 90 combo should've done the same. Add them together for the 490/445. Not to scientific but its the best way I can put it.

Have you considered the g5x4 ? Biggest baddest cam lg makes other then the g5xx. If I were you though I would definately consider the g5x3 version II. Better then version I, and version I is legendary.

Yeah g5x4 is a little much. The power u put down is one of the major reasons I'm thinking of changing bc we have similar setups. Mine without the ewp and ud pulley which will eventually go on. Do you have your dyno graph so I can compare it to my 228 graph. I'm intersted to see the difference throughout the entire rpm range. Thanks for your input.
