or you could just tell him that all he needs to do is turn the ignition on and floor it and let off three times and it should reset

I know how to reset the light, i just was wondering why it came on in the first place, since it doesnt need an oil change. Thanks anyways tho. And i thought that when i comes on, it stays on, not turns off a few minutes after you start the car.

If you dont reset the light when you change the oil, the PCM still thinks you are on the same oil change the last time the light was reset. The PCM doesnt know when you change the oil unless you reset the light. I believe it stays on for 60-90 seconds after the car is started. It uses algorithms to calculate your next oil change based on engine temp, speed, drive time, throttle, etc. Its one of GM's ways of trying to bring the maitenance cost down on their cars....I've seen the GM oil life system let some cars go 15k miles before it tells them to change the oil. Complete BS because some people are stupid enough to believe that its ok.

According to the owner's manual, it's only supposed to stay on for 30-60 sec. Which is kinda stupid IMO (why not all of the time?), but whatever.

With the key in the ignition turn it to the run position, then push in the trip meter reset and hold it in until the oil change light turns off. And you're Done!

In my 99 the light usually comes on around every 3k miles.
