Default Multi stages, when are they needed?

Ok guys, I'm trying to decide if I want to hook up my 2nd stage.
I have a dual fogger direct port, ea. stage is capable of 500 hp.
I currently have the 1st stage on a 300 hit.
What would the benifits be to using the 2nd stage compared to just upping the hit in the 1st stage?
At what point is the 2nd stage needed?
I control it all with an FJO progressive box so hooking up off the line isn't a problem as long as I ease into it.
The tires will hold all 300 of it by 2nd gear.

Im gladd you asked this question... Different people have there own reasons for multi stages. I personally think that people running multiple stages on a high 10 second or 11 second car could have better invested there money and time somewhere else in the car like drivetrain or suspension. Like I said everyone has there own opinion....


3/4 of the race is within the first 60ft so the most you can throw at the car earlier in the run and make it hook with out breaking parts the better..

Back in the day the only thing you would see was multiple stages stacked and the racer would bring them in through out the pass. First stage out of the box and once the car was up on the tire second stage would come in then if the car was throwing some serious dope 3rd stage right after that.

Due to how well tecknology has came these days it is becomeing common to either run a single stage progressed.... Or a two stage system with the main system on the progressive and the second stage as insurance..

So in this case use the progressive to tune the car to come out of the box and quickly add in as much as possible and in the event you have more or just want to add a solid shot once you are a 100 percent on the first stage you have the second stage..

This gives you more tunniibility with out having to constantly change jets and retunning. You can simply use the progressive to tune the amount of hp released and how soon it is released according to track conditions...

Thanks for chiming in Dave, I was hoping you would see this.
I've thought about just taking off the 2nd stage and selling it.
It just seems like a hassle to wire up the other system and mess with it when I could just up the jets on the 1st stage and stretch out the ramp.

What does the car run on the 300 hit?
I'm not a fan of progressors but thats a different story.
I run 2 stages, 1 right off the Tbrake and the 2nd as soon as possible.

I haven't got it dialed in yet, still trying to get it to not spin through the 60 ft with nitrous off the line. Best so far is a 9.76 with a 250 shot using 10% off the line.
I'm trying out a 300 shot now on one stage

It sucks that I can't get it to hook with much more than 25 hp hit off the line

In your case since you already have the second stage I would tune both systems in if you want to throw more dope at it.

You could go either way. You could just run one stage and keep it simple or Run the big hitting stage on the with a progressive controlling it. Use the second stage for insurance reasons.

Lets say you are racing in a certain time bracket.. You have some tire slippage out of the box due to track conditions going away. Well have the second stage through the TPS or wot switch with aprogressive but on a button.. The wot activation and the windowswitch give you the safety area but the button gives you the availibility to bring that stage in where and if you need it..

Same thing for the event you have a car start to pull on you on the top end and you justneed alittle bump to keep him from comming around on you....So basically the second stage has now become hp at a touch of the button if you need it...

Just an idea.

If it were my car. I would tune in both systems for the size shot I want and only use the progressive to dial back the first system in the event the track was going away and I could not make it bite.

I have 3.46 gears, 275-60-60 m/t d/r's and the converter flashes to 4500

I'm going to switch to 3.25 gears when I get my 9" done

The converter sounds like its to loose for a 300 shot car.

What RPM does it go thru the traps?

Goes through at about 6600 now that I switched to 28" tires.

The rpm's drop to about 5500 on the shifts

ATV, how big of a shot do you use to get your comparable weight car to go 9.0's ?

5500 isnt bad, is that when the 300 shot is on 100% ?

What is your jetting, fuel pressure and how much timing are you pulling?

My car runs about the same MPH on motor but it went 148mph with 28 jets in the Direct port.

350 shot on 2 stages but the tune up was WAY off.

The car has run about the same MPH this year with 150hp less N20.
On that big of a hit the tune up makes a BIG difference.

I'm running 32/28 in an Eldebrock direct port kit. It's too fat right now so I'm going to switch to 26 for fuel.

I'm running 16 timing.
It's hard for me to say how much I pull, it runs great n/a on 23 but will also run just as good but not better on 28

When you want to go fast and win races.

We have to consider the car. I look mostly at the average street/strip style car that frequents this forum. You can't always throw as much as you can on the rear end and live a long life, so a good reason to stage. second, the stock bottom can't always take a big hit, a good reason for staged. So, if you want to get your 11 second street/strip in to the 10's then staging can be your best friend. This is how to make a stock rear susp and rear ended car, along with less than a purpose built n2o motor live on a 300 shot. just delaying some of the hit till 2nd gear and some into the upper rpm range can and does in fact increase your over all ET, and more so your MPH. Now if you had a purpose built race car, then putting that 300 shot all in the first 60' is doable, depending on tire and class. Rather than running a progresser (also am not a fan), I would just use time delay on a bigger 1st stage and then add in more that you couldn't run on the 1st into a second stage and bingo, we have now a bigger and faster combined n2o hit than reality would seemingly allow. Many ways to skin the n2o bird, and myself i like the staged scenario and currently run 3 stages. I used this trick a couple years ago to run some outrageous times on stock IRS and stock ls6 which actually became records in a few areas in the Vette world (beat all the turbo and blower cars, hehehehe). A way to allow much bigger hits to be applied, even on race cars, so not only limited to stockish cars. Now with all that said, we are looking at a progresser, only looking at this point, to see if I can figure a way to get the IRS to get some decent 60' times, but the f-bods launch like ***** in comparison, lol. Bottom line, put what you can in the 1st 60, then if you want to get past that limit and beat the competition, add some more in at a higher rpm, even later in the run it will still help the ET and MPH .

With 32 jets in there I would pull more timing out until you get the fuel closer to right.

I have 14* in mine for the 28 jets.

As far as good 60ft times with an IRS, I've been 1.43 and that was on the bone stock IRS.
I used to not like progressives either until I started using one and now I can't live without it.
I'll probably go ahead and use the 2nd stage just see what it will do to my times.
I still need to figure out what the timing needs to be set at, I guees I'll inch it up until the plugs don't like it.
