wiring mini tach help!!!

wiring mini tach help!!! ok so my buddy and i were trying to wire a mini tach that i got in the a-pillar. anyways we tried running it off of the #35 blue wire off of the PCM, and we tried running it off of the negative off of the coil wiring harness (i think the brown on the passenger side?) anyways neither of them worked at all, anyone got any suggestions??? car is a 98 i know its a little different than the 99+.

ok so i just messed around with it for another 2 hours.... there is no blue #35, i think its actually port 36 and the white wire is in port #40 so what gives?
